Groove Juice Special

"The groove juice special keeps rolling along,
the groove juice special it's the night clubbers' song,
You're out at night, and art feelin' tight,
The juicy, juicy, juicy, juicy groove juice.

Z for ziskey is the word you'll say,
When the bottles start comin' your way,
You'll be hoppin' like hades a poppin',
The juicy, juicy, juicy, juicy groove juice."

CATHRYN SAYRE & NORMAN KAJIKAWA

L-R Cathryn with Augie Freeman, Norman dancing with Jessica

We welcome aboard two new coordinators for the SSRC. Cathryn Sayre will be our "Fun Coordinator" and Norman Kajikawa will be our "Photo Coordinator." Take a look at the photos he's loaded up on the site from previous SSRC events.

Jessica Densmore is our "Philanthropy Coordinator." She's been doing an amazing job these past years, bringing swing dancers and happiness into senior homes and hospitals.

JOIN THE FUN!
BUT, WHAT THE HECK IS IT?

Many of you still don't know about our Swing Shift Rhythm Club. It's one of our best kept secrets. Now is the time to get the SSRC "above the radar."

THE SWING SHIFT RHYTHM CLUB (SSRC), founded in 2000 by Rusty Frank's swing dance students, The SSRC has two missions:

1. Having fun! (Fun) 2. Doing good deeds! (Philanthropy)

1. Having fun: Events where swing dancers can socialize and get to know each other outside of class (vintage clothes shopping, going to a dance-related movie, dancing in the park, eating at retro restaurants before a dance, etc.).

2. Doing good deeds: Events where we bring swing dancing to hospitals, senior homes, and community events for the purpose of good deeds, entertainment, and education in the Los Angeles area.

The SSRC is a volunteer club open to the public and the events are organized by its members. There are no dues. Members can attend as many or as few events as they wish.

"How do I join?"...
Right now, fill in your email address
and click the Yahoo log (that's it!):

Then you will receive updates of activities (or you can organize one yourself!). Check the yahoogroup "Swing Shift Rhythm Club" calendar here for postings of upcoming events.

Join us in making the world a better place through dancing!

Thank you for joining!

Slim Gaillard: We often get asked what music we like dancing to, and more often than not, we'll respond "Slim and Slam"! These two gentlemen of swing were two of the zaniest musicians out there. If you know "Flat Foot Floogie" or "Cement Mixer"... you know Slim and Slam.

Slim was the master of slang and gave us much of our swing lingo. Here's a example:

"Oroony Oreeney O'routee Mellow McVouty Groovy in Vout"

And then there is our all time FAVORITE radio station -- McVooty

All Slim and Slam!!!! 24-7

We think they really capture the crazy spirit of Lindy Hop with their music. And, happily, most every one of their songs uses the AABA structure! CLICK HERE for AABA worksheet.

Here's a bit from their site, just to give you an idea of this crazy character, Slim Gaillard:

Born: Bulee Gaillard, January 4, 1916, Detroit, Michigan - Died February 26, 1991 - England Other sources including Gaillard himself have claimed he was born on 1 January 1916 in Santa Clara, Cuba. Gaillard led an adventurous childhood. On one occasion, while traveling on board a ship on which his father was steward, he was left behind in Crete when the ship sailed. His adventures became more exciting every time he recounted his tales and include activities such as professional boxer, mortician and truck driver for bootleggers.

One of my favorite stores came to me by piano jazz legend and friend, Page Cavanaugh. He told me he was doing a telethon in the 1950's here in Los Angeles. His slot was something like 3:00am. Slim went on before him and was out there forever, playing the piano and singing his typical "vout" lingo. The show's producer said, "We need to see how much longer he's going to be out there," and he sent someone out to see what he was doing. The technician came back and reported, "He's reading from the Los Angeles Phone Director, and he's still on the "As"!" Apparently he was doing something like: "Areeni, Arooti, Areti, Ariti, Asiti, Asooti..." Ya gotta love the guy!

Well, all reet!

* Wondering what the heck a "gate"is? This was a phrase popularized by 1940's comedian, Jerry Colonna, who would holler it out every time he was introduced on the Bob Hope radio program. It was a friendly salutation to a swing cat (dancer or swing music enthusiast).

Our Swing Shift Rhythm Club (SSRC) is the volunteer arm of our local swing dance community. Through the SSRC, we visit senior homes, children hospitals, and entertain and dance at street fairs. The purpose of the club is to do some good deeds and promote the fun of swing dancing.

Anyone can join the club. The events are varied, and purely volunteer in nature. You'll get a notice through the SSRC Yahoo Group website of upcoming events, and you can chose which one(s) you'd like to attend.
