WELCOME TO ALL OUR NEW STUDENTS

We couldn't have been more surprised by the great turnout last Sunday in our beginning Lindy Hop classes -- as it was Halloween, we thought we might be standing in an empty hall. But that just goes to show you, that swing seems to be here to stay! So, to all our new students, welcome to the "family." We're so happy to have you join us!

SHIM SHAM WORKSHOP

For months people have been coming up to me asking when I would again do a Sham Sham workshop... and I finally found a nice time to have it -- THIS SUNDAY! This historic Lindy Hop dance grew out of a 1927 tap dance and is done at swing dances throughout the world. I, myself, have joined Shim Shammers in Australia, Russia, Finland, Sweden, Germany, England, and Switzerland (just to name a few places!). All the info is below under the "Workshop Heading", and I sure hope you can attend the workshop. If you are keen to register right this second, click HERE.

THANKS TO ALL FOR A TERRIFIC HALLOWEEN PARTY
AT THE RHYTHM CLUB

I do believe it was our biggest Halloween turnout ever AND with the highest ratio of people in costume! I've loaded up the pics so you can relive the nite or see what you missed. Again, thanks to all of you for supporting live music (Jonathan Stout's Orchestra did a swell job!).

Our costume contest was a difficult one to judge, as so many of you came in clever costumes. But here are this year's winners: 1st place - Ricardo & Teresa (Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers), 2nd place - Lorenzo (The Chef - and he had all of USC voting for him!), 3rd place - Michael & Cheryl (Raggedy Andy and Raggedy Ann), 4th place - Jake & Charlotte (General Custer and Pocahontas), and 5th place - Faye (Baby Snooks!).

Maxwell DeMille, in his inimitable form, was our masterful MC, full of more cow jokes than you could ever dream (or hope) to hear -- Jackie Goldfield was dressed accordingly to inspire DeMille.

There are plenty of new photos up on the site -- take a look HERE.

AND THANKS TO MAXWELL DEMILLE AGAIN!

Maxwell has done it again. Webmaster extraordinaire has completely redone my "SHOP" page, and boy does it look professional. I am so grateful for the time and effort he put into this project. Take a gander: http://swingshiftontap.com/shop/ontap.asp

TUESDAY SERIES... NOT TO LATE TO JOIN TONITE

FEATURED CLASS -- SHALBOA!

Shalboa??? What the heck is that? It's our Tuesday nite class' creation for a new series: 1/2 hr Shag and 1/2 hr On-Going Balboa. Come join the fun!!!! Learn more basic Balboa, and Collegiate Shag.

For those of you unfamiliar with Collegiate Shag, this was a popular swing dance from the 1930's that has a VERY easy basic (step hop, step hop, step step). It's easy to do, and fun to mix in with your Lindy and Balboa!!!

SUNDAY CLASSES... COME JOIN US!

You can still join our Sunday classes this weekend for the second week. If you know anyone who wants to take class, tell them they don't have to wait until December (our last series of 2004!). Remember, Level 4 students, you can come back through any Level 1, 2, or 3 classes for $10/each for the entire series!

Yes, it's that time again, "The First Wednesday of the Month" when we have our Beginner Swing Dance Class at the Rhythm Club. We offer this super easy class for those who just want to check out the scene. Maybe they're not sure enough about swing dancing to sign up for a full 4-week Lindy By The Sea course yet... This class is just meant to give them a "taste" of the dance and the people, the environment, so to speak. Let all your co-workers, friends, relatives, and others (?) know about it.

NEW EVENT -- JOIN THE FUN
CALL JESSICA TODAY!!!!!!

Those who participated in the Little Company of Mary Associates event should have received your thank you's from Your Truly. Of course this comes along with a request...

Artesia Christian Home Event is rescheduled to 13 November, '04 from 2-3pm...depending on everyone's schedule perhaps we could socialize at a local restaurant afterwards...Alice knows some good ones in the area.

Since I will be moving I am not sure of computer/internet access in the next few weeks so if you could contact me at work (310-316-2424 attn medical records) or on my cell (310-713-3052) questions or affirmations I would appreciate it.

So far, myself and Scott Giordano are attending...would love to get another 4-6 couples, a West Coast or ballroom dance number, someone to carry the equipment, narrate, etc. etc.

Thanks,

Jes

1920sExperience.jpg

THE 1920s EXPERIENCE: It was a time of conservatism, it was a time of great social change. From the world of fashion to the world to politics, forces clashed to produce the most explosive decade of the century.

In music, the three sounds were jazz, jazz, and jazz. The Jazz Age came about with artist like Bessie Smith and Duke Ellington. Youth ruled everything. From the young styles of dress to the latest celebrities. If it was young, it was the thing.

It was the age of prohibition, it was the age of prosperity, and it was the age of downfall. It was the age of everything, and you'll find [almost] everything here.

Swing Shift
www.swingshiftontap.com

* Wondering what the heck a "gate"is? This was a phrase popularized by 1940's comedian, Jerry Colonna, who would holler it out every time he was introduced on the Bob Hope radio program. It was a friendly salutation to a swing cat (dancer or swing music enthusiast).
