"QUINTUPLETS" IN THE CAN
RUSTY'S TELEVISION CHOREOGRAPHY WELL-RECEIVED

Phew! It was fun. It was a great experience. And I'm glad it's in the "can". The last five days of being on the 20th Century Fox movie/television lot choreographing the swing dance scenes for "Quintuplets" were fantastic. I was an unknown to the director and most others, and, you will be happy to know, they were all thrilled with my work. The scenes were easy for me to choreograph, but the challenge was working with one actor (Johnny Lewis) who was not a dancer and a professional dancer (Robert) who had never done lindy hop. Fortunately, they were good friends, and the professional dancer really helped Johnny "go for it" (which we know is the secret to dancing). Also, they were both fully determined to do real Lindy Hop, not fake dancing, including getting Shadow Charleston and a Swing Out! Not bad, considering they really only had three days to in between scenes to practice. I was able to get quite a bit of fun lifts and throws in the scenes to make it really energetic. I pretty much figured that that is what two high school boys would do if they "danced" together (see the program, and you'll find out why it's two boys!). I think the air date is July 28th. But I'll find out for sure so you can set your vcrs. I also took loads of pictures, but can't seem to get my camera hooked up to the computer today (of course); so I'll try to get them up for next week.

One of the things I enjoyed as much as choreographing and watching the process of the staging, acting, filming, etc., was just walking around the historic parts of the 20th Century lot. The first sound stage was from 1928. I thought of all the movie stars who would have walked around that lot: Tyrone Power, Shirley Temple, Alice Faye... I thought of all the wonderful movies from that studio that I have watched over the years. All the talented writers, composers, all who used to walk the same paths I was wandering. Awe inspiring.

Once again, I would like to thank my college buddies, Jim Bernstein and Michael Shipley, for recommending me for the show. Here's the show's official website: http://www.fox.com/quints/home.htm

THANKS FROM JESSICA

[This came in from Jessica, whose mother passed away last week.]

Rusty,

I want to thank everyone who wrote, called, showed up and supported us after Mom's passing. Glenn gave me the Rhythm Club photo during the reception (after the funeral service) and people were just stunned that someone would think to do something so thoughtful. Between the dance friends, the Church friends, old high school chums and Dad's neighbors, Dad and I, Steve, Sean and Fran feel very uplifted. Celebrating her life rather than mourning her passing was more comforting because of all of you. Special thanks to Dean Campazzi of the Medjugorje Rosary Prayer Group, St. James Catholic Church for leading the Rosary at the Viewing , to Gilbert Concepcion for assisting with Lector duties during the Memorial Service., and to Ria McLaughlin for catering the Reception following the Service.

Blessings,

Jes

JULY "BALBOA CRAZY"

FEATURED CLASS -- BASIC BALBOA
INTER/ADV BALBOA!

That's right -- you read it correctly. We've been overwhelmed with requests for more Balboa at all levels. So, we had a brainstorm, why not turn Tuesday nite into Balboa Crazy Nite! The 7:30-8:30 series will be Basic Balboa, and then the 8:30-9:30 (which is normally Level 4) will be an intermediate/advanced Balboa. We've been learning Bal moves from dancers around the world, and we promise to bring in moves you have NEVER learned before!! Come out of the woodwork! For those dancers (who shall remain nameless -- but we know who you are -- wink), come and join us again!!

AN EMAIL FROM AUGIE

THIS email in today from Augie... our Lindy Hop student currently serving as a Marine over in Iraq:

Rusty,

Sorry it has been a while. I am back in Fallujah. I have been back for about three weeks now. It's getting really hot here. It's tough adjusting back to this place. I do appreciate everything that you have done for me though. You are a good and kind person. It was good to see you again when I got to go home. I hope that everything continues to go well for you. If you ever need anything from me, just let me know. Right now we are monitoring Main High ways around here trying to keep people from placing bombs along the road. However, it seems that we, ourselves, are the victims of these devices from time to time. It is very frustrating. We aren't getting very meaningful missions either so it seems like we are not cracking down on the bad guys. Progress here is slow and comes at a cost. I keep wondering how much more the american people can take losing their sons and daughters. There are days where I see 19 year olds who should be in your class, but instead they are fighting, and at times I see them being carried off into the hospital, badly mangled at times. I try to keep my sanity though. I have great friends. I also listen to all of the swing music that I brought. My favorite artist is, and always has been Benny Goodman. Great musician. I have not received your package here. It seems that mail gets to the states but it does not get here. I will keep waiting though. My time is up though so I must go. Take care rusty and I will see you again when I get back.

your friend,

Augie

Swing Shift

* Wondering what the heck a "gate"is? This was a phrase popularized by 1940's comedian, Jerry Colonna, who would holler it out every time he was introduced on the Bob Hope radio program. It was a friendly salutation to a swing cat (dancer or swing music enthusiast).
