"They used to say there wasn't such a thing as not having a tap dancer in your show! 'Cause in my day, no matter where you went you would run into tap dancers. Everything had tap!"

LEONARD REED "MR SHIM SHAM" PASSES AT AGE 97

As you already know, my dear friend, and master showman, Leonard Reed passed away Monday, April 5th at the vibrant age of 97. He died peacefully and still with a full plate of plans, including filming his newest Shim Sham creation Saturday the 10th... Sigh...

As the word got around, some wonderful websites were posted honoring this legendary man. I though you might enjoy reading about this man. But, I tell you what, no matter how much you read, you'll still only have a glimpse of Leonard Reed.

RUSTY RETURNS TO OZ
ANOTHER TRIP TO PERTH, AUSTRALIA
APRIL 12-28
"HULLABALOO"

rustyhop.jpg

One of the greatest parts of my line of work is the travel. My motto has always been "You never know where your dancing shoes will take you." And believe me, it's the truth! I've danced in castles, in movies, in theatres, in parks... you name it.

hulla_logo.gif

Tonight, I return to one of my favorite spots -- Perth, Australia for their first Lindy Exchange, aptly titled "Hullabaloo." I'll be teaching tap dancing and lindy hop for two weekends. And you know I'm looking forward to this fabulous journey!

All my South Bay classes will be up and running in my absence with your very own Rhythm Pals, Ron and Gio. For those of you who observed the Easter Holiday and were unable to attend class, you can save your class cards and use the missed class next series.

The Rhythm Club will be running at full tilt (see schedule below) with Gio hosting the club on April 14th with The Pete Jacobs Quintet, and Ron hosting on the 21st with Hilary Alexander djing. I'll be back on the 28th for Dean Mora's Swingtet!

If it's your birthday this week, just let us know at the Rhythm Club so you can get your birthday dance!

"OPERATION AUGIE CARE PACKAGE"

As you've read, one of our precious swing dancers is currently serving a tour of duty with the Marines in Iraq. His nickname is Augie, swing dancing is his main passion. He'll be there for some time, and his job there is intense (to say the least). Jessica Densmore, came up with the idea of a "Care Package" from us to Augie.

We have the Swing Shift Rhythm Club (SSRC), which is a volunteer program where we, well, basically try to make the world a better place through swing dancing by community service and just plain old fun events. We often send dancers to hospitals and senior homes, and we get together to dance in fun places like the "Swing!" show and Disneyland.

Jessica, who coordinates the community service arm of the SSRC, came up with "Operation Augie Care Package". (What a gal!).

So here's the idea:

We put together an awesome "Swing Care Package" that we send over to Augie and his pals. Some of the ideas so far are:

* Swing Music cds
* Swing related books
* Homemade pastries (cookies, cakes)
* Swing related clothing (T-shirts, shoes, etc.)
* Instructional swing dance videos
* A video from us to him (to take place at the Rhythm Club with our greetings... date to be announced)

If you would like to participate in "Operation Augie's Care Package" with a gift or an idea, or even a small monetary gift to cover the postage or a gift):

EMAIL Jessica at jdensmore@mail.com. Or you could give her your care package gift Wednesdays at the Rhythm Club or Sunday's at Lindy By The Sea classes.

We thank you all in advance for your care.

Dancingly,

Rusty on behalf of the Rhythm Club/Lindy by the Sea and the Swing Shift Rhythm Club http://swingshiftontap.com

P.S. If you would like to write Augie a letter, here's his mailing address:

DOESN'T GET MUCH CUTER THAN THIS! ART FROM HOPE

Last year, when I was in Perth, I met the city's youngest Lindy Hopper -- Hope. We've been emailing since then, and just today I received this adorable piece.

BREAK INS AT REBEKAH LODGE BE CAREFUL

thief.jpeg

Sadly, we had three car windows smashed Tuesday evening while we were in class at Rebekah Lodge. The thieves were beyond bold, smashing the windows while we were in the building, the cars were directly under a light, and the lot was across the street from the Police department. Is there no safe place? Please be careful with your cars. In all three cases, the car owners had left belongings in their cars, visible to the thieves. Please make sure to bring in your belongs or lock them securely in your car's truck.

PERTH'S HULLABALOO: The most isolated city on the planet earth will be hosting it's first Lindy Hop Exchange in a couple weeks. Feel like going there? Here's two ways: Hop on a plane, or hop on the internet and go to this site. Either way, you'll have a blast. 'Cause no one does it like the Aussies. Class all the way, not to mention FUN! SPIRIT! And a sense of HUMOR. They're the greatest! Happy viewing.

You can actually listen to some of the project's interviews online at http://www.si.edu/ajazzh/johp.htm

Swing Shift

* Wondering what the heck a "gate"is? This was a phrase popularized by 1940's comedian, Jerry Colonna, who would holler it out every time he was introduced on the Bob Hope radio program. It was a friendly salutation to a swing cat (dancer or swing music enthusiast).
