FEBRUARY 1, 2004 COMMUNITY FORUM

The Community Swing Forum is this Sunday! The response has been wonderful. Make sure to come along to contribute your ideas, hear other ideas, and generally brainstorm on how to keep swing dancing/music alive and kicking.

Here's the email we received from Paris, France:

Email from Eric Barrandon - Paris, France:

Rusty,

I completely agree with you. LA is the only one place where we can dance every night on swing rhythms in different places. (It was like this when I came for 6 months in 1999). Don't loose this chance.

For us, in Paris, we don't have any more some places to dance (Just 1 or 2 old clubs with live music). Since 5 or 6 months, some thinking group of dancers are talking about the way to preserve swingin place in Paris. I don't know if there is a solution but I hope so. It would be so damaged not to have club where to listen and dance on good music.

This summer, I will come with friends in California, from San Francisco to LA, to show us and make us discover your country and the wonderful places where we can dance on good swing music. We will finish by LA and, may be, we will meet for 1 or 2 dances.

"Amities",

Sunday, January 31st, 2004, 6:30-7:30pm at Rebekah Lodge in El Segundo (406 E. Grand Avenue).

END-OF-SERIES PARTY, FEBRUARY 1, 2004 7:30-10:00PM

Our wonderful End-of-Series Party will follow the Community Swing Forum. I'm sure you'll all want to get up and dance after talking about it! See you there! (Rebekah Lodge, 406 E. Grand, El Segundo)

NEW SCHEDULE ANNOUNCED FOR UPCOMING SERIES
MONDAYS MOVE TO TUESDAYS

Starting in the February series, Sunday will be the beginner-intermediate swing classes, and Tuesday will become the Featured Class and Level 4 night. Mark your calendars now. Make sure to spread the news.

Tuesday's Featured Class is "Classic Lindy Hop". Ah! This class will be delicious! We're going to be digging back to the early days of Lindy Hop's resurgence for those tasty character moves that are just beginning to resurface on the dance floor here in Los Angeles: Johnny's Drop, The Mini Dip, Passing Kicks, Touches, Groucho, Tango, and so on. These are the moves that really give Lindy Hop it's syncopated character. They're stylish, they're fun, and really part of the dance's unique heritage.

Level 2 and up

THANKS TO ROBIN CAMPBELL
SUPER MOM-GRAPHIC DESIGNER

We got a call last week from James Blackman, Executive Director of the Civic Light Opera, offering yet another wonderful publicity chance for us. He said he wanted to GIVE us the full-page color ad at the back of the souvenir program of "Swing!". But I needed to get the art to them right away. Robin Campbell (Rhythm Pal Ron Campbell's wife, and Ryan Campbell's mom), came over with baby slung over her shoulder, sat down at the computer, and voila! designed a beautiful ad for us. Thanks, Robin, you are amazing!

LAST WEEK AT THE RHYTHM CLUB

rudysandra.jpg rudy-darrell.jpg rudyallen.jpg rudyrickjos.jpg joswick.jpg

Rick Joswick and his magnificent fellow players, known as Jumpin' Joz, were in fine form last week at the Rhythm Club. One of the club's favorite bands kept everyone on the floor for three hours of dancing pleasure. Rusty was able to procure some copies of their latest cd if you need one for your collection: http://swingshiftontap.com/ontap.asp

It was great to have Rudy Flores back at the club! He'd been out with the flu for a couple weeks. Welcome back, Rudy!

RevampVintage.com: One of the most commonly asked questions we get is "Where do I get great vintage-style clothes?" One of our favorite stops is "Revamp". Miss Annamarie Firley is an absolute geneous at recreating danceable clothes from the 1910s-1950s. If Rusty's wearing it, it's probably Revamp! Take a look!

* Wondering what the heck a "gate"is? This was a phrase popularized by 1940's comedian, Jerry Colonna, who would holler it out every time he was introduced on the Bob Hope radio program. It was a friendly salutation to a swing cat (dancer or swing music enthusiast).
