FEBRUARY 1, 2004 COMMUNITY FORUM

The response to my call for a Community Forum has been wonderful. I'm really looking forward to the chance to hear your ideas, to talk about how to keep our hobby/passion going for as long as possible.

I received emails from all over the world. Particularly telling, they urged Los Angeles dancers to keep going out, as their local scenes have dwindled down over the last years.

So remember to mark your calendars for Sunday, February 1, 2004, 6:30-7:30pm at Rebekah Lodge in El Segundo (406 E. Grand Avenue) for our first Community Forum.

NEW SCHEDULE ANNOUNCED FOR UPCOMING SERIES
MONDAYS MOVE TO TUESDAYS

Starting in the February series, Sunday will be the beginner-intermediate swing classes, and Tuesday will become the Featured Class and Level 4 night. Mark your calendars now. More to follow. (Monday nights will be free for you to use as you choose, dancing at Maxwell's at the Argyle, Alpine Village, or just a quiet home night.)

RUSTY BEGINS NEW CAREER AS RECORDING ARTIST
WITH THE UK'S JIVE ACES

Rusty-Jives.jpg
Rusty with Vince and Ian of the Jives Aces
In the recording studio laying down some tap dance tracks for the Jives new CD

(Should have saved this one for April Fools!). Well, indeed she did get to step into the recording studio with two of the Jives who are visiting from across the Pond to engineer and put the finishing touches on their new cd. Rusty first met and became friends with the Jives when she lived in England (1996-1998). They've been good buddies ever since. Every time the Jives pop into town, she either has them at her Rhythm Club or just has a nice "chin wag" if their time is short. This time they invited her in to the studio to watch them record. But when she arrived, they had devilish smiles on their faces, and asked her if she would help with some background vocals for their new Louis Prima-esque version of "Singin' In the Rain". Would she! What fun! It was very professional, a beautiful big recording studio, and everyone was having loads of fun. Though Rusty was nervous beyond belief, the Jives kept telling her, "It's just for fun." Then Rusty offered to lay down a tap dance track for them to use or not use. So they popped the headsets on again, re-mic'd her, and away she went.

If you've never recorded before, it's quite a strange experience. You stand in a sound-proof room by yourself. Everyone else is grinning at you through two or three plates of glass from the other room. The music and you (singing or tapping) is piped through the headsets, there are microphones all over the place, there is a click track, and off you go! You hope that you do it right the first time so as not to waste their time...

Whether or not Rusty will end up on the cds remains to be seen. Just think of all the artists who have ended up on the cutting room floor. We'll all wait and see. Anyway, as they say in jolly ol' England, it was heaps of fun!

LAST WEEK AT THE RHYTHM CLUB

Campus5-04.jpg
Jonathan Stout and His Campus Five Featuring Hilary Alexander -- at The Rhythm Club

Over 90 dancers were stomping their happy feet last week at The Rhythm Club to the fantastic music of Jonathan Stout and His Campus Five Featuring Hilary Alexander. As usual, Ricardo started the evening off with his swell entrance class in bright blue zoot suit (yeah, Ricardo!). We were thrilled to have Allen and Rudy back in town from Minnesota (our travelling swing dance couple). They lift the ceiling up just that much more anytime they make an entrance. Pictured here with one of our very favorite leaders -- Tony. The spirits were flying high, and there was a smile on everyone's faces!

QUICK VISIT WITH THE JENSENS

Last Friday, Rusty had the wonderful opportunity to lunch with the Jensen family. For those of you who have been wondering about their baby's progress, we thought you would love this picture of Derek, Lovelynn, and toddler Tristan. What a cutie!

Swing Shift
www.swingshiftontap.com

* Wondering what the heck a "gate"is? This was a phrase popularized by 1940's comedian, Jerry Colonna, who would holler it out every time he was introduced on the Bob Hope radio program. It was a friendly salutation to a swing cat (dancer or swing music enthusiast).
