DECEMBER -- WHAT A SWINGIN' MONTH FOR ALL OF US

holly.jpg

We have sensational line-up this month. Wrapping up 2003 classes, a weekend Holiday workshop this Saturday, and what a line-up at the Rhythm Club.

I hope you all enjoy the last three Wednesdays of 2003 at the Rhythm Club. This week we've got the Fabulous Esquires (and, remember, we have the Beginner's Swing Dance class for all your friends from 7:30-8:00pm), next Wednesday the 10th Jonathan Stout and The Campus Five, and then on the 17th (drum roll, please) ta ta ta ta ta ta da da ta da ta da da ta ta....

THE BILL ELLIOTT SWING ORCHESTRA!

Come and celebrate with us for this swingin' holiday party at the Rhythm Club, a nite that features our special celebrity guest master of ceremonies Mr. Maxwell DeMille, a performance by Rusty's Swing Shift Fliers, and dancing by YOU!

If you have to pick just one date to go dancing, make it December 17th -- at The Rhythm Club with The Bill Elliott Swing Orchestra.

RUSTY'S DANCING FAMILY!

Like many of you, I got to visit with my family over the Thanksgiving holiday. While hanging around the kitchen of my brother's house that evening (the best hangout on Thanksgiving!), I caught a little movie of my mom and I doing the Charleston. It was many years ago, when I was fourteen years old, that my mom and I stood in the hallway of our house and she taught me the Charleston! I remember how much I struggled with it (for years, it seemed!). My little niece, Sara, always is after me to teach her some dancing when I'm down there for a visit. This time she learned that classic Charleston move "Monkey Knees". Watch out, folks, this kid catches on quick! She'll be Lindy Hopping with the best of 'em any day now! Take a look at the movies -- not bad for a seven year old, eh!

A NEW LEAD! RYAN ARTHUR CAMPBELL

I'm so happy to report that Ron and Robin are home with their baby Ryan and doing great! I spoke to Ron last night, and he said that little Ryan has been a wonderfully easy baby so far. Robin was in labor for 32 hours (1 1/2 hard labor), and then the docs decided to do a C-Section. All went fine. But that meant that Robin had to stay longer in the hospital. They were admitted last Monday and just came home Sunday night. Ron stayed with her in the one room at Torrance Hospital the entire time, and he said it was a breath of fresh air to get home and be able to amble through all the space! I took some pictures of our adorable little fellow the day after he was born and posted them for your viewing pleasure. Click on the photo above to see the rest of the pics.

Ron told me something cute about picking their son's name. They knew they wanted an "R" name (as they are both "Rs" -- Ron & Robin). They were considering the name "Ryan" and looked up the meaning of the name and found it to signify "king". Since the little one's middle name was going to be Arthur (after a significant relative), the name was set: King Arthur!!

All hail the king!

Mixed Pickles: [In their own words] "MIXED PICKLES is Philadelphia's vintage dance company. We research, perform and teach American dances from the colonial period all the way up through the 1940s. Our name reflects the dual nature of dance history, as something that is both educational and delightfully entertaining at the same time. It also refers to the kaleidoscope of cultures and classes that have influenced the way that Americans dance; influences that came from the French, English, Irish, Black and Latino; drawing from the elegant ballroom as well as the rowdy dancehall."

Mixed Pickles has some delightful pages on it's site, including dance etiquitte from WAY back. Here are some items on the list:

It is the duty of a gentleman having a place in a quadrille, to have his lady with him; otherwise he forfeits his place.

Never take part in a quadrille without knowing something of the figures.

While dancing, endeavor to wear a pleasant face.

Always finish your toilet before entering the ballroom.

Dancing is subject to much abuse by the thoughtless acquirements of bad habits.

In ascending a staircase with ladies, go at their side or before them. It is the gentleman's duty to lead the lady and hers to follow.

Swing Shift

* Wondering what the heck a "gate"is? This was a phrase popularized by 1940's comedian, Jerry Colonna, who would holler it out every time he was introduced on the Bob Hope radio program. It was a friendly salutation to a swing cat (dancer or swing music enthusiast).
