COSTUMES, COSTUMES, COSTUMES!
RHYTHM CLUB TOMORROW NITE!

Hello everyone! Well, tomorrow night is our big Halloween swing dance party at the Rhythm Club. I can't wait to see everyone's costumes. Remember, this year, for the first time, we have a $100 CASH prize for the winner. So be creative! Just make sure you can still dance in your costume.

THANKS, 'SAINT' GLENN!

I want to thank Glenn Parkison (our local hero) for stepping and assisting me for classes Sunday and Monday while Gio and Ron were off in Connecticut competing at the American Lindy Hop Championships. Glenn did a terrific job!

FEATURED CLASS - LINDY STYLING!

We got off to a great start yesterday. A wonderful turnout of students old and new. We started out the class by watching about ten minutes of lindy hop clips, one of Whitey's Lindy Hoppers from the old movie "A Day at the Races", and the second of Angela (UK) and Daniel (Sweden) demonstrating a lindy choreography at the Herrang Dance Camp last year. Each week of this Lindy Styling series will begin by watcing a vintage and new clip. We get a chance to really study the elemets that makes the dance fun, interesting, unique, and (Rusty's favorite) silly!.

We then did some movement exercises using some traditional Lindy boogie steps such as the "Mess Around", "Boogie Drops," "Truckin'", and so on. And, finally, we concluded the session with some arm options in swingouts. The men did "Frankie's Bow to the Queen" "The Swedish Sweep" and "Ron's Baseball Game Hotdog". The ladies did a sweep up, side, and down. What a difference!!

It's definitely not too late to joing this class. Come along next week.

PROFESSIONAL DANCERS' SOCIETY FALL BALL
RUSTY AND THE JITTERBUGS PERFORM

Rusty-AvaAstaire.jpg
Rusty and Ava Astaire (Fred Astaire's daughter!)

I had a chance these past week to attend some wonderful dance-related events. The first was the Professional Dance Society's Fall Ball. The honoree, Lee Hale (special material man for the Dean Martin Show), specially requested my performance group The Jitterbugs! So two Friday's ago, Tise, Jerry, Hilary, Chandler, Minn, Corrina, Nick, and myself performed at the Sportsman Lodge in front of about five hundred professional dancers from the Golden Age of movies, nightclubs, and television.

The highlight of the evening for me was that Fred Astaire's daughter, Ava, actually introduced our group!! Wow!

I also got to meet Dom DeLuise, Mitzi Gaynor, Red Buttons, and many others.

NICHOLAS BROTHER - FAYARD - TURNS 89!

Fayard-Katherine89.jpg
Katerine and Fayard Nicholas

One of my favorite tap dancers of all time, Mr. Fayard Nicholas, turned 89 years young this past Monday, and I got a chance to join in at the festivities. The party was held at Scavenger's Paradise in North Hollywood, and the place was filled with tap dancers and friends. Also present was Fayard's wife, Katherine, who was my first tap dance teacher when I was eleven years old. Talk about a small world!

BABY JITTERBUG - TRISTAN - GROWING STRONG

TristanPumpkin.jpg

Then this Saturday I got to check up on Lovelynn and Derek and baby Tristan. For those of you who remember them (yes, yes, once babies arrive, dancers disappear.. but we understand!), I spent a delightful day helping the family pick out baby's first pumpkin! Ahhh!

TAP DANCE BENEFIT

Rusty-PaulaKelly.jpg

Saturday night, me and my tap dance partner, Gregory Gast, attended a wonderful fundraiser for Universal Dance Designs, a school that trains primarily lower income African American "at risk" kids. And do they do a sensational job! The fundraiser was called "The Cotton Candy Club" (take off on the "Cotton Club") and was held in the glamorous Beverly Hills Woman's Club. The room was set up like a niteclub, and many celebrities were on hand, including Paula Kelly ("Sweet Charity"), Skip Cunningham, Miriam Nelson, dule Hille, Linda Hopkins, Dormeisha Sumbry-Edwards, and Jason Samuels-Smith. Chester Whitmore was on hand on the music side (too bad he didn't tap!). The host of the evening was Obba Babatunde (who played Harold Nicholas in The Dorothy Dandridge Story, for which our very own Bill Elliott did the music).

There was a raffle, and guess what Rusty won???? Two tickets to a Laker's game. She asked, "Who are the Lakers?". Obsessed with dance, you ask!

Swing Shift
www.swingshiftontap.com

* Wondering what the heck a "gate"is? This was a phrase popularized by 1940's comedian, Jerry Colonna, who would holler it out every time he was introduced on the Bob Hope radio program. It was a friendly salutation to a swing cat (dancer or swing music enthusiast).
