"Life's a brand-new ball game every day!
Remember that of all the elements that comprise a human being,
The most important, the most essential,
The one that will sustain, transcend
Overcome and vanquish all obstacles is - Spirit!"

~ poem by Buddy Ebsen ~
1908-2003

BUDDY EBSEN CELEBRATION TRIBUTE - WONDERFUL!

DickVDyke.jpg
Wow! Rusty & Gregory hoofing with Dick Van Dyke

This past Saturday, August 30th, a standing room only crowd of six hundred filled the Television Academy Theatre to pay tribute to Buddy Ebsen, song and dance man, television star, painter, poet, and friend. The celebration, put on by his wife, Dorothy Ebsen, truly was a celebration, which included speeches by many of his working colleagues -- Dick Van Dyke, Bill Holt, Fess Parker, Lee Meriwether, Max Baer-- a beautiful song crooned by Kiki Ebsen (Buddy's daughter). Rusty and her tap dance partner Gregory Gast paid homage to Buddy and his sister Vilma with a little song and tap dance -- of course, the Shim Sham Shimmy! Take a look at the Quicktime Quickies for a glimpse of the performance.

RUSTY & GREGORY PERFORM AT JAZZ SWEET AND HOT!

BanuRustyGr.jpg
Rusty & Gregory with Banu Gibson

After the Ebsen Tribute, Rusty and Gregory flew over to Los Angeles' Jazz Sweet and Hot Festival to perform with New Orlean's Banu Gibson. They'd worked on a brand new tap dancing routine to her version of "I've Got My Fingers Cross", and simply wowed the jazz enthusiasts with their pedal rendition of the song. For jazz fans who are used to sitting for three straight days listening to music, it was a surprise and delight to SEE jazz artists -- tap dancers! Rusty and Greg came back a couple songs later joined by Banu (a nifty tap dancer, herself) in the Shim Sham Shimmy to "Doin' The New Lowdown". Then, if that weren't enough, Banu asked Rusty if she'd like to do a lindy number to "Truckin'" But, of course! So she ran over to the other room, where Bill Elliott was playing, and found dancing pal Jason Taylor (of the Hollywood Hornets), who readily agreed to join her onstage.

But, wait, the night still wasn't over. Rusty then ran over to Bill Elliott's dance at the Festival and joined Fayard and Katherine Nicholas and Bill's Lucky Stars onstage for The Shim Sham Song! (three Shim Shams in one day - phew!). Bill's band couldn't have sounded better, and loads of fans and dancers were there to cheer him on, including veteran swing radio personality Chuck Cecil and his wife Edna.

All in all, a WONDERFUL DAY!

TALENT-PARADE.jpg

Just when Rusty got a chance to catch her breath, it was time to lace up the tap shoes once again for a Monday performance at Hollywood's Maxwell's At The Argyle for the Labor Day Talent Parade. On hand were fellow hoofers Gregory Gast and his other partner Bobby Barron, and our pal Will Ryan on ukuelele. A weekend just doesn't get much better than that. (Did we mention that Rusty also got to have a pancake breakfast with Ron and Robin???)

FIND OUR FRIENDS -- FINALLY!

guess.jpg

It took two weeks for someone to finally name all three of the Simpsons' swing people! Congratulations to Julius Yang for picking out Victor & Melissa (dancing front and center) and guitarist John Reynolds (of Dean Mora and Palms Springs Yacht Club fame). Julius is the lucky winner of an Elmo Aardvark futuristic cd (compliments of Will Ryan).

Now here's the story behind the picture. Victor and Melissa were celebrating their first year anniversary. So Victor, knowing that the first year gift is paper, got his friend, who had been an artist on the Simpsons' show, to draw this. What a guy!

If anyone is interested in getting their very-own Simpson-esque drawing, here's the guy to contact: John Berado (Simpson's artist) tash99@comcast.net.

Swing Shift

* Wondering what the heck a "gate"is? This was a phrase popularized by 1940's comedian, Jerry Colonna, who would holler it out every time he was introduced on the Bob Hope radio program. It was a friendly salutation to a swing cat (dancer or swing music enthusiast).
