Learn to fly, soar, dip, slide, and more!

(see below for Nathalie and Yuval's upcoming workshop!)

headline-quote-of-the-week.jpg

"Remember why it is you started doing this dance in the first place. It has never been nor will it ever be about hitting a break, doing that certain step everyone else is doing, syncopating, or spinning faster and harder than anyone else. The reason we all got into this crazy 'Matrix' called the 'Swing Circuit' was to have fun, meet new friends and have a wonderful tactile 'conversation' on the dance floor. A good conversation occurs when BOTH get a chance to speak and neither person yells.

Have a good time out there.
Don't take it so seriously."

Mario Robau, Jr.

August 8-10
Ten Classes:
Slides, Dips, Cool Moves, Fast Lindy, Aerials, and more!

Sign up early and save $$$$

Here's some great news! We've got Nathalie & Yuval for an entire weekend of workshops August 8-10th.

SAVE MONEY BY REGISTERING BY AUGUST 1ST!

Two of the most exciting Lindy Hoppers in the history of the dance, Nathalie & Yuval haven't taught a workshop for us since 2000! Many of you might not even have seen them yet. So just trust us that they are, in a word, phenomenal. (They'll be doing a performance at The Rhythm Club on August 6th, and you can see for yourself.)

Unlike previous workshops where they focused on aerials, this time they have a truly diverse set of classes -- something for everybody.

All the information up on our site for you to peruse and also to register, so click HERE!

Sunday Levels 2 & 3 Guest teachers -- Doug & Melissa
July 20th

As Rusty & Gio will be dashing off to Polliwog Park to teach a public swing dance class for the summer concert series (see below), Levels 2 and 3 will have the guest instruction of Doug and Melissa Allen. Doug and Melissa actually met in Rusty's classes several years ago, and later (as you can see by the above photo) married. They have been guest teaching for Retroglide Dance this year, and we look forward to welcoming them to the roster of Rusty's Rhythm Pals. They are wonderful people and beautiful dancers. Enjoy!

This Week's Celebrations

* Greg Fry
* Skeehpee Martinez-Lavin
headline-swing-trivia.jpg triviaJune25-2003.jpg

On June 25th, Sally Hoyt was our Rhythm Club trivia queen. Congrats, Sally! Not only are you a wonderful dancer, you're smart, too!

Last week we had three songs, "Who were the artists and what did they have in common?"

1. Dean Martin "Ain't That A Kick In The Head"
2. Sammy Davis, Jr. "Love Me, Or Leave Me"
3. Frank Sinatra "I Won't Dance"

You've pobably guessed it by now -- The Rat Pack! Yes, you're right. Professor Vangor had to fight back the contestants, but the winner was Julie Bisceglia.

Hats off to Professor Vangor for testing our swing knowledge!

LAUGHLIN LINDY DANCE CAMP
AUGUST 14-17TH
TWENTY FRIENDS ALREADY SIGNED UP!

dancefun_button.gif

The ever-fun Laughlin Lindy Dance camp is comin' up this August. Rusty'll be on hand as one of the teachers (wait till you see the list of instructors!). We already have twenty people signed up just from our classes and club! Come along and let's get a really BIG group!

This camp is probably the most "affordable" of all the swing dance camps, and includes transportation, three nights in hotel, three meals, all classes and dances! Why don't we see if we can get a Lindy By The Sea gang for this one. Email: john@dancefun.com, call 310-530-0500, or check out their website HERE. Tell them, "Rusty sent me". There are already over 200 people signed up for the camp -- you'll have loads of fun!

SUMMER CONCERTS AT POLLIWOG PARK
RUSTY & GIO WILL BE ON HAND THIS SUNDAY - JULY 20TH!

Polliwog.JPG

The Manhattan Beach Concerts in the Park series is an annual, Summer-long event held each year at Polliwog Park. It runs from the last week in June, through Labor Day weekend, and has featured such artists as the Doo-Wah Riders, Lisa Haley and the Zydekats, and the Fab Four, as well as a host of other talented musicians.

Rusty and Rhythm Pal Gio have been invited to teach a beginner's swing class at the July 20th event. So why not make that the one day that we'll ALL show up! So bring a picnic and join the fun. By the way, we always have a good showing of swing dancers at the dates with swing dance-able music!

Concerts run from 5 p.m. - 7 p.m. For information, call 310-802-5400 Here's their schedule of concerts that might be fun for swing dancing:

June 22: Hyperion Outfall Serenaders -- Dixieland
June 29: Scot Bruce -- Elvis
July 20: Jumpin' Joz -- Swing ** WE'LL BE THERE!!!
August 3: Orchestra Charangoa -- Cuban Jazz

Check out their website HERE

Have you seen our new banners around town? There's two in El Segundo and one at the Rhythm Club. You'll see the friendly faces of the Rhythm Pals on and off the dance floor.

CAMP HOLLYWOOD!It's just around the corner, THE only lindy hop camp devoted entirely to "The Hollywood Style" of swing dancing. Our pal, Hilary Alexander, is the event producer, and she works all year to put together a sensational event. Look at the site and you'll see that she's got great bands, great teachers, and a solid venue (really close for all of us South Bay folks).

On a final sad note, we all would like to send our condolances to Chris Johnson for the loss of his mother. Chris has told us that during these past difficult months, swing dancing has been a god-send for him. Thank you to all who have helped lift his spirits on and off the dance floor.

Swing Shift
www.swingshiftontap.com

* Wondering what the heck a "gate"is? This was a phrase popularized by 1940's comedian, Jerry Colonna, who would holler it out every time he was introduced on the Bob Hope radio program. It was a friendly salutation to a swing cat (dancer or swing music enthusiast).
