Our "Operation Dance" has gotten off to such a great start that it looks like we will be able to bring over, not one, but two Lindy Hoppers from St. Petersburg, Russia -- Katja and Fyodor! Thanks to all of you who responded to our first email, we have two airline tickets (from our very Tomasito), one free pass to Swing Camp Catalina Island donated by Pasadena Ballroom Dance Association, private lessons with Peter Loggins, Tip and Holly, Nick Williams, Jerry Jordan, and loads more offers of support!

So, drum roll please, here is our "Operation Dance" web page with all sorts of information on how you can help. Click HERE

Special thanks to our "Operation Dance" committe, consisting of Jennifer Thomas, David Russell, and Sarah Heitman, and, of course, our gal in St. Petersbug, Megan Virtanen!

LAST WEEK A THE RHYTHM CLUB
SCOTT AND CHERYL VISIT FROM THE EAST -- USC HAS A BIRTHDAY!

scott-cheryl-michael.jpg

Last week we got a chance to catch up with our old friends Scott and Cheryl, who recently relocated to New York. Between dances we found out they finally have gotten settled (so, start planning your dancing trip!), but had a bit of a challenge as they landed the day of the three-feet of snow blizzard (what a day to start looking for a flat). But sounds like all their looking paid off. Living in Brooklyn Heights, they are at the top of a three-story old old building with a beautiful view. Sigh! Hurray back for anothr visit, kids. It was great to see you.

Birthday dances are always fun, but gather up a couple handfuls of USC Swing Club fans, and the level of energy rises significantly in the room. Rah Rah!

RUSTY & JERRY JORDAN TO TAUGHT
SATIN BALLROOM -- SATURDAY APRIL 19TH!

jerryrustysatinballroom.jpg

Hundreds of people gathered on the Satin Ballroom dancefloor for a first -- the first time teachers from two different schools taught together at this largest of monthly swing dances. The crowd thoroughly enjoyed themselves to a "little bit of this" and "a little bit of that" -- getting a flavor of each of the teachers' styles. During the class, Jerry Jordan, dreamy dancer extraordinaire, made a special request of Rusty -- to become an honorary Rhythm Pal. "You bet, Jerry!" Who wouldn't want Mr. Jordan as her Rhythm Pal. They just don't get much smoother than him.

Outside of the class, the Satin Ballroom attendees ere treated to an amazing display of musicianship on the bandstand with not just one, but two, outstanding small groups: Jonathan Stout and His Campus Five Featuring Hilary Alexander, and The Feetwarmers. What a night! See a sampling below under Quicktime Quickies to relive a great night or see what all the fuss is about.

Mora'slogo.gif

Dean Mora is simply one of the most outstanding musicians one can hope to know. And are we ever lucky to have him right here in Los Angeles. He has been bringing an excellent brand of vintage swing to us happy dancers for years now. His brand of music has helped usher in a broadening of swing dance scope to include Collegiate Shag and Balboa. Though this week at the Rhythm Club you will be treated to his small group, puruse his site and read about his large group, Mora's Modern Rhythmists. Any swing officiando has practiced that title till they can say it with ease! And while you're at it, why not purchase one of his many enjoyable cds. Top rate music, top rate musicians, top rate fun. Happy listening.

Swing Shift
www.swingshiftontap.com

* Wondering what the heck a "gate"is? This was a phrase popularized by 1940's comedian, Jerry Colonna, who would holler it out every time he was introduced on the Bob Hope radio program. It was a friendly salutation to a swing cat (dancer or swing music enthusiast).
