Many Lindy By The Sea students and friends were on hand last night (Monday, March 10th) at Maxwell's at the Argyle to watch Rusty tap dance with Chester Whitmore to "How High The Moon." They performed the classic tap routines the Shim Sham Shimmy and The B.S. Chorus (yep, you figured it out). Later on they were joined by Gregory and Bobby ("Hats and Canes") and Jeff Beauregard for an impromptu tap jam session accompanied by the Chester Whitmore Big Band. On hand in the audience were Fayard and Katherine Nicholas, John Cooper, Hilary Alexander, our own Rhythm Wife -- Robin Campbell, Revamps' Annamarie Firley, and many other local dance celebs.
Rusty with Gregory and Bobby "Hats and Canes" at Mel's Diner
Our good swing pal, John Cooper, was at the Rhythm Club for Rusty's birthday two weeks ago and wrote up this nifty little review for his website. Thought you might enjoy it ( From The Los Angeles Swing Broadcast of 1939
If any of you would like to have a private swing dance lesson, give Rusty a call at 310.606.5606.
FRANKIE'S CRUISE: Okay, so you've got a few extra bucks, some time off, and wondering what to do? How about joining Frankie Manning -- the original Lindy Hop man himself -- along with a few hundred of his nearest and dearest friends to celebrate his 89th birthday out at sea! Sound good? Then join the Lindy Hoppers doing just that this May on Frankie's Cruise. There will be dancers from around the world all dancing the week away. And if you do go, please tell us all about it!!!
See you on the dancefloor!
*Wondering what the heck a "gate" is? This was a phrase popularized by 1940's comedian, Jerry Colonna, who would holler it out every time he was introduced on the Bob Hope radio program. It was a friendly salutation to a swing cat (dancer or swing music enthusiast).
