TASTE OF DANCE
SATURDAY, MARCH 22, 2003
WITH RUSTY & HER RHYTHM PALS -

RETROGLIDE'S JERRY AND CHANDLER

It's been over three years since we did our last Taste of Dance. So mark your calendars for this one!

How many times have you had to leave the dance floor when a Mambo came on? How many times have you dreamed of dancing with that great Salsa dancer? What about those fabulous Lindy Hop character steps, such as the Minne Dip, Johnnie's Drop, Groucho? Do you leave the floor when everyone else runs on to do the Shim Sham? Well, here it is -- A Taste of Dance! One full day dedicated to getting you on the dance floor all night. Were offering 50-minute classes in a wonderful array of dances from which to choose. Take the entire day, or just sample four of your choice, or maybe there's one or two for which you've got time. it's up to you. All we ask is that you ENJOY! And feast to your heart's content!

And it's all with the fabulous Jerry and Chandler from Retroglide Dance Society

RUSTY & CHESTER AT THE ARGYLE

Many Lindy By The Sea students and friends were on hand last night (Monday, March 10th) at Maxwell's at the Argyle to watch Rusty tap dance with Chester Whitmore to "How High The Moon." They performed the classic tap routines the Shim Sham Shimmy and The B.S. Chorus (yep, you figured it out). Later on they were joined by Gregory and Bobby ("Hats and Canes") and Jeff Beauregard for an impromptu tap jam session accompanied by the Chester Whitmore Big Band. On hand in the audience were Fayard and Katherine Nicholas, John Cooper, Hilary Alexander, our own Rhythm Wife -- Robin Campbell, Revamps' Annamarie Firley, and many other local dance celebs.

A REVIEW FROM JOHN COOPER

Our good swing pal, John Cooper, was at the Rhythm Club for Rusty's birthday two weeks ago and wrote up this nifty little review for his website. Thought you might enjoy it ( From The Los Angeles Swing Broadcast of 1939
http://forums.delphiforums.com/SwingLand/messages/?msg=1172.1):

BIG 'DO' AT RUSTY'S RHYTHM CLUB

World famous dancer Rusty Frank celebrated her birthday with a party/dance at her Rhythm Club in Playa del Rey.

With music provided by the Bill Elliott Swing Orchestra in it's first appearance of the new year, a full house of moist dancers pounded the planks from 8:30 pm until nearly midnight.

Festive oriental lanterns adorned the entrance way to the Rhythm Club and a birthday cake was consumed by friends and relatives of the lady of the house.

Miss Frank's extended birthday dance was accompanied live by the BESO with a repeat performance of "The Best Things Happen While You're Dancing".

In addition to three sets by the BESO, there were also three dance routines performed by 'Frank-N-friends' [The Jitterbugs], Chandler, Tise, Hilary, Jerry, Francisco, Stacey and a new "Rhythm Pal", Arnold. The second performance was a highly entertaining and animated production choreographed [by Frank] to the well known Elliott composition, "Mildred, Won't You Behave" which showcased a hyper-active, spectacled, mega-hairbowed Frankette as a mucho 'gusto' "Mildred" with Chandler Smith portraying her hapless blind date. Envision Betty Hutton and Gil Lamb in "The Fleet's In" as Hutton throws him around and he cries out for help and you will have some concept of the mayhem of last evening's 'stage show'.

Silver screen dance legend Fayard Nicholas was in attendance and graciously responded to much applause when his presence was heralded and his name announced by the MC of the gala, Mr. Maxwell DeMille.

Before long about midnight, the event wound down as Vitus-challenged dancers headed home across the rain and windswept thoroughfares of Los Angeles.

*Wondering what the heck a "gate" is?  This was a phrase popularized by 1940's comedian, Jerry Colonna, who would holler it out every time he was introduced on the Bob Hope radio program.  It was a friendly salutation to a swing cat (dancer or swing music enthusiast).
