GREETINGS GATES*!

PICTURE OF THE WEEK

Rusty - Our Birthday Girl! (In her favorite swing outfit)

QUOTE OF THE WEEK

"Gotta Dance!"

-- Gene Kelly ("Singin' In the Rain") & Rusty Frank

A NOTE FROM RUSTY

Well, today's my birthday. And when I think about all the things for which I am thankful, the list most definitely includes doing what I love for a living, having all of you in my life, and the fact that my very own mom and dad are coming to the Rhythm Club this week to help me celebrate.

My parents' life always included dancing (my dad learned how to Lindy at Arthur Murray's so he could meet and dance with girls, my mom said she would never marry a man unless he knew how to dance!). When I was a little girl, I remember so well my dad showing me the Lindy in our family room, and I remember my mom patiently teaching me the 1920's Charleston in our front entry-way. And, they always supported my tap dancing (as loud, and non-rhythmical as it was!)

This week's email is loaded with fun pictures, which I hope you'll have time to view. Just scroll down and take a gander, then scroll back up and read what you'd like.

Thank you all, once again, for making my life so precious. I can't wait until Wednesday at the Rhythm Club!

WITH RUSTY & HER RHYTHM PALS - RETROGLIDE'S JERRY AND CHANDLER

It's been over three years since we did our last Taste of Dance. So mark your calendars for this one!

How many times have you had to leave the dance floor when a Mambo came on? How many times have you dreamed of dancing with that great Salsa dancer? What about those fabulous Lindy Hop character steps, such as the Minne Dip, Johnnie's Drop, Groucho? Do you leave the floor when everyone else runs on to do the Shim Sham? Well, here it is -- A Taste of Dance! One full day dedicated to getting you on the dance floor all night. Were offering 50-minute classes in a wonderful array of dances from which to choose. Take the entire day, or just sample four of your choice, or maybe there's one or two for which you've got time. it's up to you. All we ask is that you ENJOY! And feast to your heart's content!

And it's all with the fabulous Jerry and Chandler from Retroglide Dance Society

THE RHYTHM CLUB WOULD LIKE TO INTRODUCE
OUR NEW DOOR PERSON
SANDEE "MEGAN'S MOM" ASHBY

We are happy to announce that we have found a wonderful new door person to greet you each week at the Rhythm Club. Her name is Sandee Ashby, and she is the enthusiastic mom of our Swing Shift Flyer member Megan Ashby. "I love to watch the dancing. I love the music. And I just love to be around it all." Well, we're gonna love to have you around, Sandee. Welcome to our "family".

LAST WEEK AT THE RHYTHM CLUB

Rusty has a quiet moment at her home with the Harlem Hot Shots

THE HARLEM HOT SHOTS. Wow! What a night. With the Harlem Hot Shots as our special guest celebrity performers, the place was packed with a full sampling of Los Angeles AND Santa Barbara dancers. The Hot Shots performed three super numbers, and you can see by the photos below and the audience reaction, the crowd was floored. This new group, an off-shoot of the Rhythm Hot Shots, is sure to become the newest lindy sensation.

HILARY ALEXANDER. Hilary is quickly becoming a dj-favorite at the Rhythm Club. She once again proved to be simply one of the finest swing dj's we know. We can't wait to have her back. Mark your calendars -- March 12th, she'll be singing with Jonathan Stout and His Campus Five, and March 19th, she'll be back dj-ing. Seems like the dancing throngs just can't get enough of Hilary!

SPECIAL THANKS TO ALEX VASALLO for taking all these great pictures! You really captured the night, Alex.

USC

We are on our fourth week teaching Lindy Hop over at USC and definitely having a ball. Here Rusty and Rhythm Pal Ron take a moment for a snap with the co-eds.

OUR FRIEND RUDY FLORES

One of our great friends and regulars at the Rhythm Club each week is Rudy Flores. He is a quiet presence, and one of the sweetest men we know. Every Wednesday he comes through the door and says, "I'm here for my pleasure treatment and my anti-aging therapy." One week he brought in this picture of himself from the '40's. I asked him to write up a bit about the picture and himself. So here it is. Enjoy. Oh, and by the way, last week he reveal to me that he was a Fanchon and Marco Kiddie -- that was one of the best tap dance schools in Los Angeles. There's so much to learn about our friends!

"The picture of Millie and me was taken in a sidewalk studio in New York City. The year was 1945. I was 19 years old,, in the army, stationed in North Long Island. I served in the medical field. My rank as shown in the picture was Corporal T5.

When I was in high school, I was more interested in music than dancing, although a high school buddy is the one who taught me the basic six count swing step. Another high school friend got me interested in playing drums and that is what I enjoyed doing for many years.

It was 1948 when I joined a young people's club where we enjoyed dancing after every meeting. I loved listening and dancing to those big band arrangements. I would often go to the Hollywood Palladium just to listen to the music.

I began swing dancing again last June at the Rhythm Club dance parties after a layoff of more than 40 years. It's my favorite night of the week."

* * * * LINK OF THE WEEK * * * *

THE BILL ELLIOTT SWING ORCHESTRA. You're gonna get to hear them this week in person, and here's a chance to get to know them a little bit better before hand. Bill has been one of the driving forces, not only in Los Angeles, but throughout the world, in the new era of swing. He is simply one of the greatest composers and arrangers of swing music we know. But he also has a fine reputation in the world of television and film for music composition. Go to his website and learn more about his orchestra and this incredible man who lives right in our midst.

*Wondering what the heck a "gate" is?  This was a phrase popularized by 1940's comedian, Jerry Colonna, who would holler it out every time he was introduced on the Bob Hope radio program.  It was a friendly salutation to a swing cat (dancer or swing music enthusiast).
