GREETINGS GATES*!

PICTURE OF THE WEEK

Lunch time is dance time for workers at Baldwin Locomotive Works, Philadelphia. Girl shop-clerks and men from the Army tank assembly line are shown here doing a jitterbug dance outside the plant. Professional musicians doing war work makeup a 12-piece band, "giving out" for the dancers. Photo dated: September 2, 1943.

QUOTE OF THE WEEK

"While I dance I cannot judge, I cannot hate, I cannot separate myself from life. I can only be joyful and whole. That is why I dance."

-- -- Hans Bos

HILARY ALEXANDER KEEPS 'EM HOPPIN'
AT THE RHYTHM CLUB

photo: Mary Ann Stuehrmann

Miss Hilary Alexander made her debut at the Rhythm Club, not as previously seen -- songstress of the Campus Five -- but as dj superb. What a delicous surprise for all of us swing dancers, as she pulled one song after another from her private swing music collection. We also were treated to the brand new recordings off her yet-to-be released cd (March???). What a gal! She can do it all -- sing, dance, host one of L.A.'s most popular swing clubs (Suzy Q's), produce one of the world's great swing camps (Camp Hollywood), and now delight us all with her dj-ing skills. Thanks, Hil!

And, did we mention the turnout on our "little Saturday"?? One hundred and twenty happy lindy hoppers in our very own South Bay rhythm spot (including over fifteen newcomers from Level 1 -- welcome to club, kids!).

DISMUKS VIRTUAL TALKING MACHINE!!.... -- This site was forwarded to us by two of Rusty's oldest and dearest friends, Ted & Theresa Medbury. Dismukis devoted to vintage music from the early decades of the 20th Century. All recordings have been transcribed into streaming Real Audio from the original 78 rpm discs from the web hosts personal collection. As this mystery person says: "It is my hope that this site will help further the creation of a new generation of enthusiasts for an exciting, vibrant and, sadly, all but forgotten era of American popular culture." *Wondering what the heck a "gate" is?  This was a phrase popularized by 1940's comedian, Jerry Colonna, who would holler it out every time he was introduced on the Bob Hope radio program.  It was a friendly salutation to a swing cat (dancer or swing music enthusiast).
