THE HOLLYWOOD HORNETS "DRESS REHEARSAL" PERFORMANCE
OF THEIR 2002 U.S. OPEN COMPETITION ROUTINE!!!
We are so unbelievably lucky to have the one and only Hollywood Hornets joining us this week at the Rhythm Club! This team is rapidly becoming one of the best Lindy Hop performance groups in the nation, and to that end, they will be competing this weekend at the U.S. Open Swing Dancing Championships in Anaheim! You may have seen them perform this number at the Rhythm Club several weeks ago, or perhaps at the last Satin Ballroom, but wait till you see it NOW! It's sharper, cleaner, and has a fire and energy that will blow you away! They are coming down to give it a run through in front of a crowd and WE ARE IT!!! So make sure to come down and scream and yell for local favorites, The Hollywood Hornets!!! If you want to root them on at the US Open, check out this website: http://www.usopensdc.net/navmain.htm

ALOHA HOLIDAY PARTY -- THE FABULOUS ESQUIRES
DON'T MISS IT!! -- NOT TOO LATE TO JOIN
THIS MONTH'S FEATURED CLASS -- THE LINDY CHORUS
Our last series of classes for the year (and the last series -- sob! -- with Rusty & Peter together before Peter trades in his dancing shoes for the mighty pen) began on
Sunday and Monday, November 24th and 25th. It's not too late to join. Students are always welcome week two of any series. Come and join the fun -- and the LAST SERIES -- sob again-- with Rusty & Peter together.
For those of you who were unable to join us last week, we had a ball!!! We had the pleasure of giving an official welcome to Ron Campbell and Gio Quintero, who will be stepping in to teach classes at Lindy By The Sea with Rusty next year. Everyone joined in for a lively "Welcome Dance" and the two men showed off what extraordinary dancers they are. We are so happy to have them joining us -- two of the nicest fellas and best leads around!
AND, we had a terrific performance by Rusty and Peter's Performance Class in the high-energy routine, "Shout and Feel It"!!! The class did an excellent job with this number, dancing up a storm to the song and really wowing the crowd!!! We are just so darned proud of them and the fine job they did with this, and the audience seemed to agree, giving them all an incredible ovation at the end of the performance! And as if that weren't enough, the group turned around and did it AGAIN at Suzy Q's in Westwood on Friday night. We want to thank Hilary Alexander, hostess of Suzy Q's, for inviting the class down, and the crowd of friends and well-wishers who turned out to cheer on the Performance Class as they gave out with another fine rendition of the routine to still more applause and cheers from the onlookers! Well done, everybody!!!
MUSIC FOR THE UPCOMING ANIMATION AWARDS (THE "ANNIES")
(prize to anyone who can email us who we're imitating: email@example.com)
L-R Will Ryan, Rusty, Peter, Westy Westenhofer (Palms Springs Yacht Club)
Last Saturday afternoon, Rusty and Peter were thrilled to be invited out to the San Fernando Valley to help judge entries for the upcoming Animation Awards! Our pal, Will Ryan -- who many of you know and have danced with in classes and at the Rhythm Club -- is a great cartoon voice artist and animation expert. Will is on the board and former presient of ASIFA (The International Animatef Film Society), an Animation organization that puts on the annual Animation Awards, known as the "Annies". Rusty and Peter jumped at this opportunity, and got to spend an afternoon viewing cartoon clips that had been submitted for the category of "Best Song or Score in an Animated Feature or Television Program".
It was really an interesting time, but best of all -- they got to meet Tinkerbell!!! Or rather, they met this lovely woman who was just dropping some tapes off at the ASIFA offices. Will casually mentioned that she was the girl filmed by the Disney Studios for live-action reference footage for Tinkerbell in the animated feature, "Peter Pan"!!! WHAT A THRILL!!! She is still as cute as ever, and gladly struck many of the poses instantly recognizable as Tinkerbell's! We can't thank her, or Will Ryan, enough for this memorable afternoon!
TAKE FIRST PLACE IN PRESTIGIOUS TENNIS TOURNAMENT!!
One of our students and friends, Jon Moody, whom many of you have seen in our Performance Class displays lately, has recently had a major achievement in his own life outside of swing dancing (what IS there outside of swing dancing...?) It seems that Jon has been an incredible tennis player for many years and belongs to a team which just won FIRST PLACE in a competition against 3,000 other players from around the country! We just wanted to extend our hearty congratulations to him on this major event in his life, and to share the joy with all of the Lindy By The Sea family!!!
Our friend and helper (and dancer extraordinaire) Amanda McCullough, has an extremely cute 8 1/2 week old kitten for which she needs to find a home. The kitten is a mixed tabby with gray, white and tan markings and is in need of a loving and happy home. Amanda wanted to make sure that whoever decides to adopt this kitten should be a real cat lover and will take good care of it. If you are interested, please email back to us and we will pass it along to Amanda. Thanks!!!
This holiday season, why not give your loved ones something they've always wanted...swing! Whether it's a series card, good for four weeks of great dance classes with Lindy By The Sea, or maybe some passes to the Rhythm Club on Wednesday nights, it's a gift that really fits all! You can even set up some private lessons with Rusty -- what a terrific present for the swing dancer in your life! Just email us at firstname.lastname@example.org, call 310 606 5606 or personally ask for any of these things at any Rusty and Peter event, and we'll be more than happy to take care of you!
If any of you would like to have a private swing dance lesson, give Rusty a call at 310.606.5606. (Photo: David Saffir)
THE SWINGIN' YEARS, with Chuck Cecil! -- This week, we salute one of the true legends in the swing music world...a man whose contribution to the continuing appreciation of swing music is beyond calculation: Chuck Cecil!!! Chuck has been hosting his radio show, "The Swingin' Years" since June, 1956! That's over forty-five years of playing the great music we all know and love, week in, week out, through the onset of rock and roll, disco, heavy metal, rap, electronic music, and whatever else has come down the line. Chuck just keeps swingin' along, and we are endlessly grateful to him for it. Chuck is also known to many of us as the emcee each month at the Satin Ballroom, the world's largest monthly swing dance, and his impeccable and instantly recognizable voice lends an air of authenticity to the proceedings. Above all, though, Chuck and his lovely wife Edna are two of the kindest, sweetest, most warm-hearted people you could ever hope to meet, and their love for this music and dancing is very real. We owe them a huge debt of gratitude. And if you haven't yet heard Chuck's show, CHECK IT OUT!!! It's the real deal, and it can be heard on many public radio stations. This week's link takes you to Cal State Northridge's page devoted to the man and his show, but most of us can hear it from 6am - 9am Saturday and Sunday mornings on 88.1 KKJZ, out of Long Beach! Give it a listen and hear a legendary DJ at work!!! Click here: http://www.kcsn.org/programs/swinginyears/bottom.htm
See you soon!
*Wondering what the heck a "gate" is? This was a phrase popularized by 1940's comedian, Jerry Colonna, who would holler it out every time he was introduced on the Bob Hope radio program. It was a friendly salutation to a swing cat (dancer or swing music enthusiast).
