LIVE MUSIC AT THE RHYTHM CLUB!!
AND A FREE BEGINNERS SWING CLASS!!!
WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 6TH 2002
We are so proud to be able to bring you another fine swing band for your dancing
pleasure this week at the Rhythm Club: the fabulous sounds of the Jumpin' Joz band will
be swinging out all night long and we can't wait to hear them! We've been friends and
fans of the Jumpin' Joz band for many years and we're thrilled to be able to bring them
to you for a night of terrific music. The leader of the band, Rick Joswick, is also an
amazing lindy hopper, so he really knows how to play a tune in the perfect tempo and
with the perfect feel for swing dancing. (Remember, the cover charge is $12 on nights
when there is a live band --
still a paltry sum for such a great night of fun!)
And don't forget that this is the first Wednesday of the month, and that means we will
be having a free beginners swing dance class from 7:30 until 8:00, included in the cover
charge! This is your chance to come and bring your friends and family, co-workers,
total strangers, whomever, to learn the basics of this great dancing and get bit by the
swing bug. The class is taught by Rusty and Peter in their trademark lively way, so
make sure to tell everyone you know about this!!!
8:00-11:30pm -- Dance! Dance! Dance!
Admission $7 on dj nights, $12 when live band

THANK YOU FROM RUSTY AND PETER
REGARDING THE MUSICAL TRAGEDY...
Thanks to all of those who expressed concern regarding the "loss" of our big book o'cds (200 cds disappeared on us not too long ago). Thanks also to those who have donated cds to help us replace all that wonderful music. It's great to see what you bring in!
And speaking of music, remember, we're here for YOU at the Rhythm Club; this club is YOUR club. If you have
any requests, please come up and let us know...we want to play the music that makes you
want to jump out of your seat and dance!!! Also, if there are any songs in particular that
you own, which you would like to dance to at The Rhythm Club, please feel free to bring
them along and Peter will be more than happy to play them for you. Just be sure to put a
little Post-It note on the case with the track number you want played, along with your
name...if you ever want to see it again!! We really want to play the music that makes
you want to dance...

HALLOWEEN AT THE RHYTHM CLUB
Last week's Halloween party at the Rhythm Club was a smashing success, with LOADS of
old and new friends coming out to dance the night away in incredible costumes! Three
dance contests wowed the crowd, emceed by Mr. Maxwell DeMille and judged by Pete
Vincent! We were also graced with the DJing skills of none other than Tony Quach, the
house DJ for Lindygroove in Pasadena every Thursday night!
The night got off to a bang with Peter and Tony battling back and forth with some of
their finest swing tunes, keeping the crowd moving and swinging like crazy. Rarely did
people sit out more than a single song, as the non-stop barrage of great music kept
everyone on the floor.
At about the halfway point of the night, we held several great events! We began with a
birthday dance for our dear friend Mae Lae, who had the whole dance to herself! What a
lucky girl!!! We followed this up with our costume contest and this was really difficult,
since so many people went all out with simply incredible outfits!!! But when the parade
of costumes stopped and the smoke cleared, the results were as follows: 1st -- Gil, as
the "Escaped 'Cereal' Killer", 2nd -- Noe, as the mummy (how did he breathe in that
costume?), 3rd -- this went to a quartet of people with the same theme of "scary,
heavy-make-up wearing punk-gothic-zombies. To our astonishment, these were Denise,
Cheryl, Michael and our very own St. Glenn. In light of this costume, we may need to
rethink our nickname for him... We also had an honorable mention with a family of
hippies, led by David Stockin and his daughters.
Then came two more contests. These were dance contests judged by our friend Pete
Vincent, who was a terrific dancer in the original swing era (and only getting better
with age, we might add...) The first was a Jack and Jill contest, where dozens of
dancers took turns dancing with different partners for a minute apiece, and then
werejudged on their individual SOCIAL dancing skills. The winners of this contest were
Giovanni and Kristy! Then we had a JILL and JACK contest, where the rules were the
same, but the GIRLS led and the BOYS followed. This was just hysterical, and when it
was all over and we wiped away the tears of laughter, the winners were Jessica (yes,
our Jessica) as the best leader, and Victor as the best follower!
We particularly wanted to thank Pete Vincent for judging the contest so well and with
such charm; also to Maxwell DeMille for being the perfect impromptu emcee for the
festivities and helping to distribute the 99-Cent prizes with aplomb; and to Tony Quach
for battling till the end of the night with Peter and providing some of the best and
craziest swing tunes to grace the Rhythm Club in a long time!
Finally, Rusty found an extra week in her life to update our Scrapbook. Yes, that means that we are fully up to date for 2002. Check it out!!! You just might find yourself there... CLICK HERE for five new pages of photos (that's just about 100!!!!)

-- The Library of Congress -- This week (an election week, we hasten to remind you all...)
we offer to you something that you may not ever have thought to check out: The official
website of the Library of Congress, which has this incredible section devoted to
Vaudeville, variety theatre and American Popular culture in general! So you can
investigate an official government website and be genuinely entertained and educated
about an extraordinary chapter in the history of our nation's entertainment! This site
has links to Harry Houdini, phenomenal sound recordings (some from as far back as
1913, and including monologues, comic songs and comic sketches!), and even early films
of performers from the vaudeville era!!! This is truly a fascinating and absorbing
website, so be prepared to spend some time there!

*Wondering what the heck a "gate" is? This was a phrase popularized by 1940's comedian, Jerry Colonna, who would holler it out every time he was introduced on the Bob Hope radio program. It was a friendly salutation to a swing cat (dancer or swing music enthusiast).
