QUOTE OF THE WEEK
"I do not know what the spirit of a philosopher could more wish to be than a good dancer.
For the dance is his ideal, also his fine art; finally also the only kind of piety he knows,
his "divine service."
-- Friedrich Wilhelm Nietzsche

BEGINNERS SWING CLASS ON MONDAY NIGHTS
7PM - 8PM!!!
We are happy to announce that we will be offering a Monday Night beginners swing class from 7:00 until 8:00, for all those of you for whom Sunday afternoons are tricky! This will be the same material offered in our Sunday afternoon Level One class, so if you've been looking for a weeknight beginners class, this is the one for you! (Neptunian Woman's Club, 920 Highland Avenue, Manhattan Beach)
Also on Monday nights is Charleston Variations, our Featured Class this time around!
This is always one of our most popular Featured Classes and we are expecting a great
turnout, especially with the resurgence that Charleston moves are experiencing on the
swing dance floors all over!!! Plan on coming down and learning all sorts of fun, easy
moves to add to your repetoire...you'll love it!
Remember the great picture of the week last time around? It featured two young
dancers in the throes of a swingout during a contest in 1938. Well, thanks to our friend,
Kelly Cooper, we were able to actually get a hold of the young man. His name is Taylor
Gronen and he is alive and well and living in Laguna Niguel, California. He is 81 years
old now, and unfortunately can't come up to visit us (believe us, we tried!!) but was glad
to hear from swing dancers and that we used his picture as an example of the joy of
lindy hop. Just goes to show you that dancing keeps you young!!!

-- THE HARVEST MOON SWING OUT -- One of the best and longest-running swing camp
weekends is approaching. Put on by the Pasadena Ballroom Dance Association, the
Harvest Moon Swing Out is three days of classes, music, dancing and fun with some of
the top instructors in the world! The Grand Old Man of Lindy Hop himself, Frankie
Manning, will be there, instructing and inspiring dancers as he does everywhere. Also
teaching there will be Steven Mitchell and his partner Virginie, Eddie and Eve of the
Rhythm Hot Shots, Kevin and Carla (Champion lindy hoppers from Washington D.C.) and
the staff of PBDA! If you've never been to a swing camp before, check this one out: It's
local and excellently priced! A great introduction to the wonderful world of swing
See you soon!
*Wondering what the heck a "gate" is? This was a phrase popularized by 1940's comedian, Jerry Colonna, who would holler it out every time he was introduced on the Bob Hope radio program. It was a friendly salutation to a swing cat (dancer or swing music enthusiast).
