GREETINGS GATES*!

PICTURE OF THE WEEK

"These are the champs, 'the "killer dillers' of all the 'rhythm killers' who took part in the jitterbug jamboree November 19, 1938. They are Taylor Gronen and Ellen Leon, of Los Angeles, who are shown in a breakway step while the 'alligators' admire their finesse and rhythm. (Expert dancers are called 'killer dillers.')"

-- Los Angeles Herald Examiner

QUOTE OF THE WEEK

"1. Beginning dancer. Knows nothing.
2. Intermediate dancer. Knows everything.
Too good to dance with beginners.
3. Hotshot dancer. Too good to dance with anyone.
4. Advanced dancer. Dances everything. Especially with beginners."

RUSTY'S VINTAGE HAIRSTYLING WORKSHOP IN SANTA CLARITA GOES OVER BIG!!!

The swing scene in the Santa Clarita valley got a real treat last Saturday as our own Rusty Frank traveled up to teach one of her trademark workshops for girls in the fine art of vintage hairstyles. There were about a dozen participants, and everyone there had an absolute ball!! They were all impressed with Rusty's expertise, and the way she made it all work so easily and comfortably for everyone. We just got a couple of pictures through e-mail from the participants, and you can plainly see how much fun they all had, and how wonderfully the hairstyles came out!!!

Special thanks to Retroglide Dance Society, Jerry Jordan and Chandler Smith, for hosting this event! www.retroglide.com

These photos came to us from workshop participant Abby Conn. "I thought you might enjoy this. It is a photo of my mom taken around 1947, and me, taken Saturday night. (Mom was around 30 when the photo was taken)."

SWING SHIFT RHYTHM CLUB UPDATE!!!

Here's the latest news from the co-ordinator of our volunteer group, the Swing Shift Rhythm Club, Jessica Densmore!!!

Our Saturday, October 5, 2002 Dance Event at St. Catherine Laboure Catholic Church in Torrance was fun, as always. This was our third year helping St. Catherine's out with their annual fundraiser, and it was an honor to be asked again.

We modified our program with a shortened version of the history of swing, and an elaboration of the three swing "traditions", the steal dance, jam session, and birthday dance. This was to incorporate not one, but TWO featured couples doing programs they tailor just for our events.

Our participants included:

Wendy Ardrey
Gilbert Concepcion
Julie Bisceglia
"The Mysterious" Michael Klug
Barb & Hugh Nellis
Linda & Tony Garcia
Jessica Densmore

We began with a selection called "Nobody's Baby" by the Bea Wain Orchestra from the MGM film, "Andy Hardy Meets a Debutante". This led into an anecdote about Fred Astaire (we chose a selection he sang called, "You're Easy to Dance With") that drew a surprised reaction from our audience. Mr. Astaire was being auditioned by MGM; his initial review read, "...can't act, can't sing, balding, can dance a little...".

There were demonstrations of the three swing traditions and various forms of Lindy Hop (swingouts) by Wendy, Julie and Gilbert, drawing interest from the "walking-by" crowd.

Barb and Hugh, our Jitterbug King and Queen, had the audience moving in their seats to their number danced to "All Shook Up" by Elvis Presley.

Linda and Tony, chose a jazz selection, "Word Up" by Cameo to demonstrate their West Coast Swing expertise, also drawing "oohs and aahs".

An interesting side note was a conversation between some of the dancers after the event, considering the different styles featured from different time periods. It was found amazing that the historical "basics" evolved into so many styles so quickly, and still evolves today.

It was also good to see our Mysterious Mike (Klug) out among us...although he disappeared too quickly for us to socialize with him a bit after the dancing.

We also thank Julie for staying when she felt like a Bonus Person and that she would just be in the way. As you saw, Julie, we need everyone to keep the "feeling" going, and we always make sure you get rotated in.

Also, Wendy and Gilbert were crucial in the demonstration of Lindy Hop, as well as encouraging audience participation. One little girl was thrilled with Wendy's easygoing approach to basic steps, and even our DJ, Maurice, was enticed away from his DJ duties to do some basic steps and try to lead a ladies' turn.

All in all it went well. Hopefully we will see more SSRC members participating in the future.

Jes

*Wondering what the heck a "gate" is?  This was a phrase popularized by 1940's comedian, Jerry Colonna, who would holler it out every time he was introduced on the Bob Hope radio program.  It was a friendly salutation to a swing cat (dancer or swing music enthusiast).
