PICTURE OF THE WEEK

Manhattan Beach Arts Festival
Life can be wonderful!!

QUOTE OF THE WEEK

"When I dance, I cannot judge, I cannot hate,
I cannot separate myself from life.
I can only be joyful and whole, that is why I dance."

--Hans Bos

A NOTE FROM RUSTY & PETER

With the anniversary of September 11th today, we would like to share with all of our loved ones our wishes and hopes for renewal. As we look back on the events of last year, and try to decide how to live our lives, we feel most strongly that we MUST live and live with our fullest hearts. If we hide and stay inside, then they have won. If we venture out and live, doing the things that bring us joy, then life perseveres. Whether it be hiking, swimming, visiting family and friends, doing good deeds, enjoying a day in the sun, dancing, whatever it is -- live boldly.

As professional dancers, we see, day in and day out, what pure joy the act of dancing can bring into the lives of everyone we know. Swing dancing provides a place where you can simply be with other people, dance to happy music, smile for hours, prance around, and just -- feel happy.

We'll be there tonight at the Rhythm Club to celebrate life. Come dance with us!

NEW SERIES STARTS SEPTEMBER 29TH
INCLUDING....
LAST PERFORMANCE CLASS OF 2002!

Our new series of classes begin September 29th

So mark your calendars!

FEATURED CLASS -- SWING RUEDA! We are so excited to be offering this class again! The last time we did it, we had the BEST responses from the class we've ever had...lots of comments like "This is the most fun I've ever had in a swing class" were rampant!

So just what is a swing rueda you ask? Well, it's sort of like a square dance, but done in a circle, and all the passing from partner to partner is done with swing dance moves. If you were at the Rhythm Club last Wednesday, you saw a brief overview of the Rueda and a great demonstration, too. We just cannot tell you how much fun this dance is!!!

If you've never done the Swing Rueda, make sure to sign up for this class...and if you were in our Rueda classes last time around, you will want to come back again, because there have been some changes made that make it even MORE fun and lively!!! (You only have to be in our Level 2 class to join!)

PERFORMANCE CLASS -- "SHOUT AND FEEL IT!"! That's right, after taking a few months to catch our breath from working on the Big Apple in the last Performance Class, we're coming back with a terrific routine -- Shout and Feel It!!! This is an incredible, high-energy routine set to the Count Basie song of the same name from the soundtrack of the film "Swing Kids". It's been featured in the show "Swingin The Century -- The Big Band Show" with the Bill Elliott Swing Orchestra, and always knocks out the crowd!!! So make sure to pre-register today for this great class and have a chance to work on professional quality material, polish your technique, spruce up your styling, and just plain have a ball! (By the way, the original choreography was by Sylvia Skylar and Rusty Frank, and will be adapted for this class.)

The Performance Class will be Level 3 and up, and runs for six-weeks. The dates are as follows: three weeks September 29th, October 6th, and 13th, then a one week break, then three more weeks, October 27th, November 3rd and 10th. And then we do a performance at our End-of-Series Party on November 17th and at the Rhythm Club on November 20th (performance optional).

RUSTY AND PETER RETURN TO USC
FOR ANOTHER SEMESTER OF SWING!!!

Rusty and Peter have begun another great semester teaching swing dancing at USC, and the first night was a rousing success! Over fifty new students showed up to take the Beginner level class, and they all had a blast!!! Everyone finished the class smiling and dancing up a storm...The board in charge of the dance club at USC is made up of wonderful dancers and they have done a fantastic job putting together these classes! Here's to another semster of fun swing music and dancing! The swing classes are put on by the USC Ballroom and Latin Dance group, and believe it or not, is open to absolutely everyone -- you don't need to be a student to join in! For more information about these classes, call their information line directly at 213-764-6062 OR check their internet site HERE

RUSTY AND PETER PERFORMED TO GREAT ACCLAIM
AT MAXWELL' S AT THE ARGYLE!!!

Rusty & Peter swing out to Mora's Modern Rhythmists

Two Mondays ago, Rusty and Peter gave a stunning performance of their classic song-and-dance act at the beautiful Maxwell's At The Argyle on Sunset Boulevard. This luscious nightclub is operated by our own pal, Stanley Sheff, and is it ever a wow! If you've never been there, you should set aside a Monday night to pamper yourself and head on over -- gorgeous decor, great food and drinks, a live band every week, and a floor show to boot! It was as part of this floor show that Rusty and Peter performed, with accompaniment by none other than Dean Mora and Mora's Modern Rhythmists! The crowd was bowled over by the numbers, and there was even a special treat as Leonard Reed, the 95-year-old entertainer extraordinaire and creator of the Shim Sham Shimmy, came to the stage! Rusty and Peter joined Leonard in a performance of Leonard's latest creation, "The Revenge of the Shim Sham" (a name coined by Maxwell DeMille himself!). A grand time was had by all!

"Rhythm is our business, rhythm is what we sell..."

Make sure to keep your eyes peeled for the next time Rusty and Peter appear at Maxwell's at the Argyle...which, coincidentally, is THIS month! Yes, save the date: Rusty & Peter will be performing with Bill Elliott and a host of other local swing celebs in a 40th birthday bash for Dean Mora. You won't want to miss this one!!! *Wondering what the heck a "gate" is?  This was a phrase popularized by 1940's comedian, Jerry Colonna, who would holler it out every time he was introduced on the Bob Hope radio program.  It was a friendly salutation to a swing cat (dancer or swing music enthusiast).
