THE GREAT SOUTHWEST CLUB SWING-OFF!!!
AT RUSTY & PETER'S RHYTHM CLUB THIS WEDNESDAY -- AUGUST 28TH!!
This week, we are thrilled to announce a special event at the Rhythm
Club! The Great Southwest Club Swing-Off is coming to Rusty & Peter's
Rhythm Club, and it promises to be an evening of spectacular music and
This event is the brainchild of Hilary Alexander (creator and
maven behind Camp Hollywood) and our own friend Tise Chao. It's a
roving dance contest that is being held at many of the top swing venues
in the Southwestern United States, and this week is our turn to shine!
Register for the contest at the Rhythm Club between 8:00-8:30 with Hilary & Tise. The contest will be held from 10:00-10:30pm. You won't want to miss this and be there to root everyone on!
Here's how the contest works: Anyone can compete who is not a regular
instructor. Couples who do not place 1st-3rd can continue to compete
until they place.
There is no limit on the amount of contests you can
participate in, although once you have placed, you can't compete again
until the final at the Satin Ballroom. Contestants are required to pay the entrance fee to
the club of their choice, and a $10 contestant fee per couple, per
Finalists must purchase the Satin Ballroom ticket, but the
contest is free. These contests will be quick and painless! The rules
are: there are no rules! Contestants will dance in small heats to
sections of two songs, different tempos. The top three will be selected
from these groups, no final round. They will be judged by your friendly
neighborhood jitterbugs. For more details on this event, click on
SPECIAL NOTE FROM US: We want to
encourage everyone to try this contest out! It's NOT just for the
hotshot-competitor types -- this contest's whole idea is to get more
people to try a contest for the sheer FUN of it!!! So let's see a whole
bunch of our Rhythm Club folks give it their all for the Great Southwest
Club Swing-Off this Wednesday night!!!

POLLIWOG PARK -- A WOW!
We had a ball at Polliwog Park two Sundays ago!!! Tise Chao joined our
own Peter Flahiff for a lively half-hour basic swing class with about 25
wildly enthusiastic folks! The class was a really great time, and could
only be followed by the incredible sounds of Mora's Modern
Rhythmists!!! The band was in great form that afternoon, wowing the
crowd with song after incredible song, all played in their trademark
classic swing style. The hundreds of spectators really got into the
swing of things, and loved every moment of the afternoon's
entertainment. Loads of them came down and joined the dancers in front
of the band for some great swing dancing! All in all, a great time was
had by everyone, and we can't wait to see you all again next summer for
more great swing music and dancing at the Concerts in the Park series at

SWING SHIFT RHYTHM CLUB
ARTESIA CHRISTIAN HOME
This in from our fabulous Swing Shift Rhythm Club volunteer coordinator, Jessica Densmore. Remember, if you would like to join this wonderful "good deed do-ers" club of our swing dance community, sign up SWING SHIFT RHYTHM CLUB.
Here's the report:
The residents at Artesia Christian Home in Artesia had been asking for us to
appear for several months. We were finally able to get a group together,
including some "new" members.
Linda & Tony Garcia
"No Name" Mike
Barb & Hugh couldn't make it and were missed.
We were greeted by Erica (Twyla's help on weekends) who quickly showed Mike
the sound system. Mike had volunteered to be our "sound man" as he felt he
was not good enough to dance.
We had twelve selections of various styles of swing music, current and
"classic", plus a Latin number, performed as a change of pace by Linda and
Tony. Lots of smiles and a few whistles for Linda on this one.
Wendy used her fantastic teaching skills and, with Gilbert, gave a quick
demonstration of dance frame, basic footwork, turns, Lindy footwork and some
Balboa. The staff was especially fascinated with this (many dropped by,
presumably on their "breaks"?) and we did get a staff member and a visitor to
join us during one dance selection.
Linda and Tony then did a demonstration of West Coast Swing which went over
very well. It is a good guess that the staff members joining the patients
were not all on breaks. Again, great job, you two.
A great inspiration for those who are still too "shy" to appear. Since we
were short two for our group, we "drafted" No Name Mike to join us on the
dance floor. The plan was to just have him in for Jam Session or Birthday
Dance type routines so he would not have to lead a whole music selection.
Before he knew it, he had finished an entire selection. Then rushed back to
the sound system to change the selection. Great job, Mike.
Everyone met at Goldilocks restaurant afterwards to go over the Event. We
agreed the Event went smoothly, Mike is a much better dancer than he thinks
he is, we hope to attract dancers who also do other types of dances...and the
food at Goldilocks is not bad either.

perform again!!! So mark your calendars now and make plans to come

*Wondering what the heck a "gate" is? This was a phrase popularized by 1940's comedian, Jerry Colonna, who would holler it out every time he was introduced on the Bob Hope radio program. It was a friendly salutation to a swing cat (dancer or swing music enthusiast).
