There's nothing the mind can do
that the absence of thought can't do better.

Joya and Jerry proudly display their Hollywood Hornets sweaters!

We are so thrilled to announce that the Hollywood Hornets Dance Team will be previewing their new routine at the Rhythm Club next week! The Hollywood Hornets team is helmed by Jerry Jordan of the Retroglide Dance Society in the Santa Clarita valley, and one of our good pals. The routine has been choreographed to be used in the Camp Hollywood Team Competition category...and our very own Ron and Robin Campbell are among the members of this outstanding group! Make sure to plan on coming down and cheer everyone on in this rare opportunity to see some of the best Lindy Hoppers around show their stuff!!!

ALSO: Sylvia Flowers will be bringing wonderful vintage and vintage-style items for all of swing dancers. She'll be bringing pin-up and cherry purses, hair decorations, flowers for hair, vintage earrings and pins, men's tie tacks and accessories. She's a lovely lady, and we're sure you're just gonna love to meet her.

LAST WEEK AT THE RHYTHM CLUB

THE FABULOUS ESQUIRES BIG BAND WOW 'EM!!!

BIG APPLE DANCERS SLAY 'EM!!

The very much indeed "Fabulous Esquires Big Band"!

Boy, oh boy, did we ever have a grand night out at the club last week! It was our sincere pleasure to bring the sounds of the SEVENTEEN-PIECE Fabulous Esquires Big Band to the Rhythm Club for a night of hard-swinging music and dancing! Loads of friends turned out for this amazing evening of entertainment, and no one left disappointed. The band played all the classic songs of the original swing era, such as "String of Pearls," "Pennsylvania 6-5000," "Begin the Beguine," "Down South Camp Meeting," and much much more! And they even premiered their transcription of the Benny Goodman recording of "All The Cats Join In"!!!! What a treat! The night was just one of the best we've had in ages and definitely reinforced the unbeatable connection between live swing music and great swing dancing.

And as if that weren't enough fun, our own performance class gave an AMAZING showing of Frankie Manning's Big Apple! The gang whooped and hollered their way through this incredibly complex and fast-paced routine and they were outstanding!!! We couldn't be prouder of the performance they gave, and judging from the ovation they recieved at the end of the show, the crowd thought so, too! Keep your eyes peeled for announcements about your next chance to catch these fine dancers performing this routine around town -- it's worth seeing again and again!!! AND, make sure to keep checking these newsletters to see what bands we'll be bringing down to the Rhythm Club next! You won't want to miss it!!!

We also received a wonderful letter from Wolf Fengler, the Esquires band leader. It looks like they had just as much fun as we did! Here's what he wrote:

Dear Rusty & Peter,

Thank you for your kind words and for inviting us to perform at the Rhythm Club. It is such a pleasure and privilege to be able to play for dancers who enjoy and appreciate our music. I have gotten many comments from band members as to how much fun they had performing for such a wonderful crowd. Your club has a very "homey" atmosphere, which I believe is largely due to the tone you two set, which makes for a great environment to play and dance in.

We wish you continued success and hope to see you very soon. Please pass along our thanks and appreciation to everyone who came...the best gigs always result from when the band & dancers can connect...and your guests were very much open to connecting with us...this gig will count as one of my personal favorites in almost 9 years of performing with the Esquires.

Yours truly,
Wolf Fengler & the Esquires Big Band

We love you, Wolf! -- Rusty & Peter

POLLIWOG PARK -- YIPEE!

Polliwog Park summer dances always pack the floor!

Last Sunday afternoon saw some outstanding swing music and dancing in the warm California sun as the City of Manhattan Beach presented another of their summertime Concerts in the Park, this time featuring the great music of the Swing Kings! This band plays a great, high-energy style of swing music that kept the dancefloor packed all day long, and we were lucky to get a chance to spend quite a while there, taking advantage of this great event!!! Many, many old friends whom we haven't seen in a long time were there, doing much the same. And the grassy amphitheatre was PACKED with locals enjoying picnic and barbeque lunches. It seemed that no matter what you came there to do, be it dancing like mad or just listening to talented musicians playing wonderful music, everyone was having a ball! A great time was had by all and we feel so lucky to have had the chance to dance the afternoon away in such a great environment!

LINDY BY THE SEA TO APPEAR AT POLLIWOG PARK!!

SUNDAY, AUGUST 18TH

MORA'S MODERN RHYTHMISTS!!!

Coming up on Sunday afternoon, August 18th, Mora's Modern Rhythmists will be on hand with their incredible vintage swing sounds! You won't want to miss them -- they are simply one of the most talented bands anywhere. The coordinator of the Concerts in the Park rushed up to Rusty and Peter at last Sunday's event at Polliwog Park and asked them to teach a basic swing class when Mora's band played next month. They said they would be delighted, so make sure to come down and bring all your friends who might be interested in this thing called swing, and help support Lindy by The Sea while you're at it! Rusty will still be out of town (WAY out of town -- St. Petersburg, actually...) but Peter will be there, teaching the lesson as best he can, with a special guest teacher yet to be announced... So make sure to set aside the time NOW to come down for a truly great afternoon of music and dancing in Manhattan Beach as Mora's Modern Rhythmists swing Polliwog Park!!!

SWING SHIFT RHYTHM CLUB WANTS YOU!

It's been awhile since we shone the spotlight on the Swing Shift Rhythm Club, so we thought it was high time!!! For those of you who are not familiar with this organization, the SSRC is a volunteer group made up of students, dancers, and other friends of the Lindy By The Sea community who get together a few times a month to bring the joy and inspiration of swing music and dancing to elder care homes, childrens' hospitals and other such venues in the Southern California area. This group is coordinated by Mike Klug and Jessica Densmore, who do a terrific job putting together lively groups of dancers to help spread Lindy Hop around with smiles to spare! There are no requirements to join this group, just a willing heart. Dancing level is the last concern on the list -- we just want everyone to have a chance to be a part of this wonderful "club". If you are interested in joining up, check out our website FAQ for all the details, by clicking HERE

We got this one from some fellow swing dancers in Madrid. Travelling this summer? Might want to hop over to Spain!!

Hello, we are Swing Madrid.com. http://www.swingmadrid.com

We are a group of lindy hoppers living in Madrid (Spain).

Here are the summer and the holidays. As we know you like travelling, if you are thinking of coming to Spain and you have the opportunity of visiting Madrid, you can contact us to meet new people, have a drink together and, above everything else, dance.

We want to invite all of you too to visit our website http://www.swingmadrid.com but we would specially like to contact spanish speaking people who want to help us to improve or translate the information we give and receive as it is quite difficult to find articles, websites, news, etc in spanish.

We hope you decide to come to Spain as we have everything to be happy: sun, beaches and lindy hop.

P.D.: if you are going to send us loads of information in english, you can write to belen@yobailo.com (our translation woman).

See you soon!

Swingcerely,

Rusty and Peter

*Wondering what the heck a "gate" is?  This was a phrase popularized by 1940's comedian, Jerry Colonna, who would holler it out every time he was introduced on the Bob Hope radio program.  It was a friendly salutation to a swing cat (dancer or swing music enthusiast).
