THE SPECTACULAR
$5 END-OF-SERIES PARTY THIS SUNDAY!
JUNE 30TH, 2002

It's hard to believe it, but another terrific four-week series of classes is coming to an end in Manhattan Beach, so it's now time for us to commemorate this with our grand tradition: a DANCE! Yes, this Sunday night at 7pm, we will be having another fun End-Of-Series Party -- this dance is open to all of our students from all levels, as well as all of our friends and neighbors, so if you know anyone who has ever seemed a bit curious about swing dancing, bring them along. The dance is always well attended by our amazingly friendly students and everyone has a great time!!! It's held from 7pm until our noise curfew kicks in at 10pm, at the Neptunian Woman's Club at 920 Highland Avenue. (Yes, the very same place where we hold our Sunday and Monday lindy hop classes.) Make sure to come along and join us for this lively evening of music, dancing and fun with all your pals from the Lindy By The Sea community!!!

For full details click HERE

P.S. Due to financial considerations, we will be charging $5.00 at the door for the End-Of-Series Party. (If you have financial considerations and would still like to come to the party, talk to us and we are sure we can "swing" a deal!)

LAST WEEK AT THE RHYTHM CLUB

Peter and Jean Veloz hit it!
The "Quick Stop"

WOW!!! Last week at Rusty & Peter's Rhythm Club was really a night to remember! We had none other than swing dance legend Jean Veloz in our midst as the Guest of Honor, and honor her we did! Jean graced us with her beauty, modesty and above all, her incomparable dancing. Jean also had with her members of her family, including Guy Veloz, son of her late husband and dance partner Frank Veloz, his wife, Amy, and Frank's previous dance partner's (Yolanda) niece, Bonnie! We were privileged to present Jean with a framed certificate expressing our deep love and gratitude for her and her dancing. Jean was gracious and pleased with the honor, and showed it moments later when she took to the dancefloor for a special dance display with our own Peter Flahiff! They dance to the bluesy song, "Let It Roll", and did Jean ever knock everyone out!!!

Cheers and hollers echoed through the room as Jean hit every break and styled every momvement in her inimitable way. Probably the greatest cheers coming when she did some switches with more style in her little finger than the rest of us have in our whole bodies!!! What a DANCER! She recieved an incredible ovation at the end of the display, and she seemed just thrilled to pieces! We especially want to thank Mr. Maxwell DeMille (aka Stanley Sheff) for helping us out and emceeing this part of the evening's entertainment.

TO JEAN VELOZ

In recognition of her years of excellent dancing.

From the beginning of the Swing Era up to today, Jean Veloz has been an inspiration to dancers worldwide. We hereby honor and recognize her achievements in bringing the art of swing dancing to a global audience through her work in motion pictures, swing dance camps, competitions and exhibitions.

We further honor her unique and dazzling dance style, a style that encompasses pure joy, and one to which all dancers aspire. Her warmth and grace have brought countless people to the joys of dancing. Her love of swing music and dancing has presented a constant challenge and inspiration for all dancers at every skill level to reach within themselves and achieve more than they thought possible.

On behalf of Rusty & Peter, the Lindy By The Sea community of Southern California, and swing dancers across the nation and around the world, we present this certificate of appreciation, with best wishes for many continued years of dancing!

We also wish to extend heartfelt gratitude to Mr. Jerry Beck, cartoon historian extraordinaire, who led off this special part of the evening with a showing of a rare Betty Boop cartoon called "Swing Sister"! This was the perfect short subject leading up to the "Feature" with Jean Veloz.

And as if that wasn't enough, AnnaMarie Firley, owner and proprietor of ReVamp clothing, joined us with several racks of her wonderful wares, adding even more fun to an already incredibly swinging night! WHEW!!! Thanks, everyone, for making the night truly spectacular!!!

LIVE MUSIC RETURNS

THE FABULOUS ESQUIRES BIG BAND!!!

Make sure to mark your calendars NOW to join us at the Rhythm Club on July 10th as we bring more incredible live music to the night. The Fabulous Esquires Big Band will take the stage with seventeen pieces swingin' out all night long. We know from personal experience that this band swings with the best of 'em, since they were the band that played the wedding reception of our own recently married students Doug and Melissa Allen (nee Schilder!) And student and friend, Dave Andersen is himself a member of the orchestra, holding down a chair in the reed section! They really do swing like MAD. For more information on this band, Click HERE.

* * * * ONE MORE THING! * * * *

RUSTY GETS A VISIT FROM HER PERAMEDIC

Rusty with "her" fireman -- Keith Scott

Last Thursday, Rusty got paid a visit by a very special friend, the North Hollywood Fireman Paramedic, Keith Scott, who helped save her life on June 2, 2002. On that day two years ago, Keith arrived in an ambulence right after the firetruck. Once he got on the scene, he made sure everything went in the direction to save Rusty's life -- and he did. He made sure that Rusty wasn't moved or jostled, made sure she got into the ambulence safetly, and accompanied her all the way to Northridge Medical Hospital -- Neurology ISU. Rusty clearly recalled that these first moments set the tone for the rest of her "journey". "Keith looked me right in the eye and told me I was going to be okay. He convinced me right then and there, just moments after the accident, and I guess I believed him by that look in his eyes. When I asked him later how he knew, he told me that he had simply seen a lot in his twenty two years as a fireman, and knew what he was looking at." Rusty has made a point of staying in touch with Keith, not hounding him, mind you, just making sure that everynow and then she gets another chance to say thank you. Keith told her that she was the only one in his twenty two years who has stayed in touch. So this to everyone: If someone saves your life, remember to thank them a lot, they really appreciate it! One more thing, recently Peter mentioned that he was worried that he might not have done the right thing after the accident, but Keith said that Peter did everything perfectly -- Hooray for Peter!

*Wondering what the heck a "gate" is?  This was a phrase popularized by 1940's comedian, Jerry Colonna, who would holler it out every time he was introduced on the Bob Hope radio program.  It was a friendly salutation to a swing cat (dancer or swing music enthusiast).
