ONE-YEAR ANNIVERSARY PARTY OF
RUSTY & PETER'S RHYTHM CLUB

LIVE SWING BAND!
PRIZES!
DANCE DERBY!
and
PERFORMANCE BY THE JITTERBUGS!!
DRESS TO IMPRESS!!!

$12 COVER, ONE NIGHT ONLY!!!

Yes, we're just a little over a week away from the One-Year Anniversary of our Wednesday night venue, Rusty & Peter's Rhythm Club.  It's hard to believe it...it seems like only yesterday that we had just moved into the Elks Lodge from our former spot at Hermosa Beach's Pointe 705.  But they say time flies when you're having fun, and we've been having a BALL this past year!

So the time has come for us to celebrate, and we're having a great big party, complete with a LIVE BAND...for the first time ever at the Rhythm Club!!!  We are proud to have Barry Anthony and the Swing of Things Orchestra, direct from Long Beach's posh night club, the Sky Room!  You may have heard this terrific outfit there, or maybe at Suzy Q's two weeks ago (the same night as the Performance Class display!)  This great band will be swinging us all night long, and we couldn't be happier!

AND there will be a PERFORMANCE BY THE JITTERBUGS -- Rusty & Peter and Jerry & Tise!  They will be showing off one of the great numbers from the show "Swingin' The Century", as well as a demonstration of the Dean Collins Shim Sham!  What an evening!!!

To add a little more zing to the evening, we will also be having a REALLY fun "dance contest", known as the DANCE DERBY!  This event was the brain child of our friend and student, Cheryll Lynn.  The idea is that for half an hour, you try to dance with as many people as possible.  One partner per song (it's not a Steal Dance, after all).  All the girls are given tickets on which they write their names.  The men get tickets by asking girls to dance...they only recieve the ticket at the END of that dance, and they only get one ticket from each girl (girls, this is your night of heaven - boys rushing up to ask you to dance!)  At the end of the contest, the man with the most tickets WINS!  Then all the tickets that the men collected are placed in a bin and a girl winner is drawn, so the more she is asked, the more tickets in the bin and the better her chances of winning.  So girls, you have to think of clever ways of being asked to dance WITHOUT doing the asking, such as sidling up to a fella and telling him how much you just LOVE this song...!!!  (In the event of a tie among the men, a winner will be drawn randomly from among them...)  We are thrilled to announce that the Grand Prize offering for the evening is two $50 gift certificates to the Sky Room! (Here's a letter we got from one of our students after attending our original dance derby -- if this doesn't inspire you, nothing will!):

February 27, 2000

Rusty and Peter,

My God, I had a great time tonight!!!

I am, of course, referring to the End of Series party/Dance Derby. And as I drove home afterward, head spinning, it struck me just how ingenious this whole setup is. Allow me to detail why this is so amazing to me...

In the End of Series party, you have fashioned an environment that is basically a "rejection free" zone. How Fantastic is THAT!!! It's like being handed a Cup of Confidence at the door! Now, I am painfully shy by nature, as I'm sure you know (GRRREAT, RRRROTATE!!!) But even I will ask girls to dance at these parties. (Yes, friends and neighbors, even ME!)

Add to that the "encouragement" of the Dance Derby. I wish I could remember the name of the girl who spawned this excellent idea (I'm horrible with names, thank God for those name tagsŠ) [editor's note: Cheryll Lynn!] You turn something into a competition and I am THERE! I may not have won a free series tonight, but I won nonetheless. Just in the hour and a half of the Derby, I danced with 24 different girls; girls I probably wouldn't have asked otherwise (for reasons I no longer understand), and had the best time doing it!!

("Say Mike, would you like a refill on that Cup of Confidence?" "Why yes. Yes I would!")

I also received many compliments on my lead. ("Another cup?") What a rush that is!!! And this is absolutely thanks to you two. From the very beginning, you really focused on teaching a strong lead, a lead with no gray areas. Everyone benefits!!

Like I said, this is ingenious!! A rejection-free zone, encouragement to dance with so many terrific girls, and they compliment ME on my lead?

"Barkeep!!! A Cup of Confidence for everyone, on me!!!"

Mike

So make your plans now to join us for our special One-Year Anniversary party at Rusty & Peter's Rhythm Club, Wednesday, April 24th!!!

THIS WEEK'S BIRTHDAY:

Beverly Darling
Chris Eisenberg

(Amanda, Glenn and birthday girl Beverly; birthday girl Chris!)

Make sure to plan on joining us this week at the Rhythm Club as we celebrate the birthdays of two dear friends -- Chris Eisenberg and Beverly Darling!!!

Chris is a friend and student of ours who has been dancing with us for quite awhile.  She's a regular at our End-Of-Series Parties and we're always thrilled to see her smiling face and great style on the dancefloor!

And EVERYBODY knows Beverly!  She's the charming woman who helps us out every week at the Rhythm Club by working the door...hers is the smiling face that collects your six dollars!  And she usually gets a chance to get out of her seat there by the door and cut quite a rug with many of the great leads at the club.  She's a terrific dancer and we can't wait to see her in her birthday dance!

SEE YOU THERE!

Yes, indeed!  After all this time, we are finally able to offer a night of beginners-level Lindy Hop classes during the WEEK!  We are lucky enough to have secured the use of the Rebekah Hall in El Segundo on Tuesday nights and we will be offering our Levels One and Two Lindy Hop classes there.  The room is very pretty and a brand-new dancefloor has just been installed!  There is also (drumroll please...) lots of parking in a couple of ACTUAL parking lots!!!  This is a great change for anyone who has ever had to struggle finding parking in Manhattan Beach...  The classes begin Tuesday night, May 7th!  For more information on these classes, check out our webpage HERE!  If you'd like to pre-register online, click HERE!  For a map to Rebekah Hall in El Segundo, click HERE!

NEW PERFORMANCE CLASS TO BEGIN MAY 5TH
FRANKIE MANNING'S BIG APPLE!!!

MAY 5, 12, 26, JUNE 9, 16, 23 2002
PRICE:  $80 (That's $6.67 an hour!)
TIME:  7pm-9pm
no partner required this time!

By popular demand, we are offering Frankie Manning's Big Apple as our Performance Class this time around.  This is a high-energy, non-partnered routine originally created by legendary Lindy Hopper Frankie Manning in 1938.  The routine assembles dozens of classic Lindy Hop boogie steps and movements that will be a HUGE benefit to your dancing!  These are the movements that were a part of dancing in the 1930's and 40's and having a good knowledge of them will give you insight into your other swing dancing and help bring it up another level.

We have taught this routine many times before as a featured class or in a workshop, but have never been able to get through the whole choreography.  So now  we are offering it as a Performance Class, giving us SIX classes of two hours apiece.  So now we are certain to not only get through the whole thing, but also be able to focus on the detail and technique that this terrific dance deserves.  Make sure to plan on joining us for this incredible class...and at a mere $6.67 an hour, the Performance Class may just be the biggest bargain we offer!!!

The world's largest monthly swing dance event, the Satin Ballroom, returns this Saturday night to the Veteran's Memorial Auditorium in Culver City with another night of incredible live music and more fun than you can shake a stick at!  This dance regularly attracts over a THOUSAND swing dancers of all ages and levels to come and dance all night long on the enormous wood floor!  This weekend's event should be no exception, as the Eddie Reed Swing Orchestra is one of our most popular bands, playing regular engagements at Long Beach's Madison Supper Club!  Many of you who dance regularly at Rusty & Peter's Rhythm Club are already familiar with the music of this band, since we often play their renditiions of the songs, "Natch," "Let Me Off Uptown," and "Boogie Blues."  Make sure to plan on going to this great dance...there's nothing like it, anywhere else in the world!  (Sorry we can't be there...sob sob...we'll be cruising the Pacific Ocean with Swing Session!)

*Wondering what the heck a "gate" is?  This was a phrase popularized by 1940's comedian, Jerry Colonna, who would holler it out every time he was introduced on the Bob Hope radio program.  It was a friendly salutation to a swing cat (dancer or swing music enthusiast).
