SAINT GLENN PARKINSON!!!

Our beloved Saint Glenn...
Help us celebrate his birthday this week at the Rhythm Club!!!

This Wednesday night, the Rhythm Club swings out with a special birthday celebration for our dear friend, Glenn Parkinson.  Glenn has been with us from the very beginning of our teaching in the South Bay area.  He's become a fixture and an integral part of the Lindy by The Sea community.  Ever present and smiling, Glenn's helpful demeanor and generosity of spirit really embodies everything we strive for in the swing scene and we can honestly say that we couldn't get along too well without him.  Glenn is the unflappable greeter and front-desk operator at all our classes on Sunday and Monday, and dances with us every week on Wednesday nights...and his support and enjoyment of the monthly End-Of-Series parties is well-known.  So please come down and help us to celebrate this wonderful man who has been christened with quite the lindy-nickname...Saint Glenn!

PERFORMANCE CLASS AND RUSTY & PETER TO PERFORM!!!

Our Performance Class gave a tremendous preview at the End of Series Party, Sunday.  And they are rarin' to go this Wednesday.  So let's make sure we have a huge crowd to cheer them on!  As an extra special, added attraction, your own teachers, Rusty & Peter, will be performing their two classic song and dance routines.  Rusty & Peter have performed these numbers to great acclaim all around the world; here's your chance to see what the fuss is all about. (**Remember to save the date -- Friday, April 5th -- for an encore performance at Suzy Q's!! Click HERE for details)

AND, WE GET ANOTHER SHOT AT OUR
VIDEO PRESENT FOR FRANKIE MANNING...

Frankie Manning, a few years ago!
The man who has made so many of us "Gotta Dance!"

We also have some good news and some bad news about our video taping from last week.  As many of you know, there is a tribute to one of the founding fathers of Lindy Hop, Frankie Manning, being created!  Frankie turns 88 this year, and as a present to this great man, the whole worldwide lindy community is getting together for a special tribute.  All the global swing scenes are going to videotape their local venues dancing to Frankie's favorite song, "Shiny Stockings".  Then all of the footage will be cut together onto one take, showing a few moments of each community, all dancing to this song.  It's like a worldwide musical birthday card to one of the true greats in our dance.  Last week, we taped our part of this tribute, but unfortunately, it was subsequently taped over - dang!

So we have another opportunity this Wendesday to do it again!  So in case you missed you chance last week, here's your other opportunity!  Make sure to come and be a part of this historic event!

So come down this Wednesday night and spend an evening among friends at the Rhythm Club.. We've got some of the best DJ'ed swing music anywhere and a reputation for being the friendliest club in Southern California! Add a 2,800 square foot dancefloor and some pretty powerful air conditioning, loads of parking and a mere $6 cover charge and you've got yourself a terrific evening. And it's open to ALL AGES!!!

SEE YOU THERE!

* * * * THIS WEEK'S NEWS * * * *

WE GET LETTERS!!!

BETTY WOOD,
MEMBER OF THE BIG APPLE DANCERS,
GIVES US SOME BIG APPLE HISTORY!

Cute as a button, Betty Wood dances up
a storm as a youngster!

Many of you know that we often get fun letters from our friends all over the world, and it's always a pleasure to pass them along to you.  Well, we recently recieved some correspondence from one of our dancing pals, Betty Wood!  Betty was part of the "Original Big Apple Dancers" (1936) from Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.  We've had the pleasure of spending lots of time with Betty over the years, and she writes us often (she really likes these weekly updates, too!)  When she saw that we were teaching her friend Frankie Manning's choreography, she sent us this fun note:

You can check with Frankie, but I believe he found out about the "Big Apple" when we were dancing at the Roxy Theatre in September 1937 in New York.  Frankie and some of his group were in Hollywood making a movie.*  Whitey came to see us perform at the Roxy.  He wrote to Frankie about us and described the steps that we did and Frankie put a routine together.  His version is just adorable, with the "Suzy Q's", "Bringing up the Rear", and "London Bridge."

Did you know that Buddy Rich, the famous drummer, did a novelty act on the show...and "Baby Rose Marie" sang a number of songs.  (Later she was Rose Marie on the Dick Van Dyke show.)  Next time we are together, I'll be glad to tell you more.  By the way, our group was "Billy Spivey and the Original Big Apple Dancers"...New York wasn't called "The Big Apple" until after we were there.  Walter Winchell started calling it "The Big Apple"

Luv, Betty Wood

Thanks, Betty!

*Whitey's Lindy Hoppers were out in California, Hollywood to be exact, working on their sensational dance sequence in "A Day At The Races" to the song "All God's Children Got Rhythm." Frankie isn't in the sequence, as he was performing with another troupe of Whitey's Lindy Hoppers at the time! The story goes that he did do the choreography over the telephone!

*Wondering what the heck a "gate" is?  This was a phrase popularized by 1940's comedian, Jerry Colonna, who would holler it out every time he was introduced on the Bob Hope radio program.  It was a friendly salutation to a swing cat (dancer or swing music enthusiast).
