SAVE THE DATE:
SATURDAY, MARCH 23RD
SWING RUEDA WORKSHOP!

Make sure to mark your calendars now to join us for our next workshop: The Swing Rueda!  This is a terrific new swing dance that is sweeping Los Angeles and the rest of the global swing scene.  The dance is done in a ring with swing dance steps (some you know, some which are being created just for this dance) and a "Caller" leading the rueda shouts out moves that get you to pass partners along the ring, sort of like a square dance...but...in a...circle.  We offered this dance in our Featured Class slot two months ago and it was so popular that we brought it back for another consecutive month.  Since people still keep asking for more, we're offering this special three-hour workshop.  So for those of you who have already learned some of the Swing Rueda, and for those of you who may have missed out the first time around, come along and take this terrific class!  The cost for the entire three-hour workshop is only $25.  It's being held at the Neptunian Woman's Club in Manhattan Beach (920 Highland Avenue) from 4pm until 7pm.

For information and on-line registration click HERE or CALL 310 606 5606.

A LITTLE HISTORY ON
THE BIG APPLE!

We are excited to be teaching Frankie Manning's choreography of The Big Apple as our Monday night Featured Class.  This routine is always one of our most popular offerings, since it is so high energy and teaches so many great swing moves and steps in a concentrated time.

We recently found ourselves wondering about the history of the dance, so we wrote an email to Judy Pritchett, who is very close to Frankie Manning himself.  She wrote back to us:

Hi Rusty and Peter,

I agree-- the Big Apple is a ball! That version is from1938.  There is a plan for a Big Apple instructional video but it keeps changing so I can't tell you when it will come out. I think Frankie wants to do a different version for the video. He wants people to realize how variable the Big Apple was. It was a called dance, like in square dancing, and always different. You can hear Frankie calling it on Keep Punchin'

Love,
Judy

Thanks, Judy!

RUSTY AND PETER CREATE
LINDY HOP INSTRUCTIONAL VIDEO TAPES!!!

At long last, and having threatened to do this for several YEARS, we have finally decided to produce a series of instructional video tapes based on our swing classes. With the brilliant camera work and editing skills of Stanley Sheff, assistance from Daylon Smith and Robert Mooney, and working in the incomparably beautiful showroom of Michael D'Angelo, Inc., we have shot instruction taken from the curriculum of our Levels One, Two and Three classes (Sunday afternoons). We had a ball making these tapes (with only marginal technical difficulties, mostly in the form of crickets chirping in the background and airplanes flying overhead...) and are eagerly looking forward to finishing up the production and releasing them for you all to enjoy. Now you can take Rusty and Peter home with you!!!

* * * * LINK OF THE WEEK * * * *

The great folks over at the DanceDanceDance website have put together an amazing listing of movies which have swing dance scenes in them! Most of us are complete swing addicts, and will gladly rent and scour and movie we can get our hands on, if there is a rumor of a swing scene in it! Now you can peruse this listing and start haunting you local video store to find these great movies to inspire you. WARNING: some of these films are pretty obscure, so get ready to do some serious searching!!! Click HERE

See you soon!

*Wondering what the heck a "gate" is?  This was a phrase popularized by 1940's comedian, Jerry Colonna, who would holler it out every time he was introduced on the Bob Hope radio program.  It was a friendly salutation to a swing cat (dancer or swing music enthusiast).
