PICTURE OF THE WEEK
QUOTE OF THE WEEK
""....as recently as three years ago a jitterbug was anyone who bounced,
wiggled and jumped in time to hot music without any particular
knowledge of what he was doing. But the accomplished jitterbug of the
present does the Lindy Hop...[a dance that] encompasses hundreds of
individual steps, breaks and mutations..."
SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 23RD
TAP DANCE AND LINDY STYLING WORKSHOP!!!
Jeni LeGon & Bill Robinson
For those of you who are new to us, we often hold workshops each month, and February is no exception! We are excited to bring you a terrific two-hour workshop in Tap Dance and Lindy Styling! The first half of the workshop, from 4pm-5pm, is devoted to teaching lindy hoppers some of the fundamentals of the art of tap dancing. In the course of the hour, you will learn an entire tap routine!!! (Sorry, no tap shoes allowed on the floor... just wear hard-soled shoes, really anything will do...)
The second part of the workshop, from 5pm-6pm, is for lindy styling, the perfect place to learn some great new footwork and movement to add to your swing dancing! The cost for the workshop is $15 per class or $25 for the entire event...a great bargain!!! Pick up one of the registration flyers at any of our events and sign up soon, or sign up online at our website at http://swingshiftontap.com/WORKSHOPS/02-02-23.htm

Furthermore, cast members of "Swingin' The Century -- The BIg Band Show" will be on hand to perform their terrific dance number - "Mildred, Won't You Behave?" This number was one of the real highlights of that amazing show, and for this performance, we are excited to announce that none other than JOHN O'CAMPO of Bill's Lucky Stars will be performing IN THE NUMBER! Normally, John sings with the Lucky Stars, up on the bandstand... but for this special occasion, John will be joining the performers in the dance number, helping to create an unforgettable show! COME TO THE RHYTHM CLUB THIS WEDNESDAY!!!
IT'S A VALENTINE'S DANCE
WITH ALL YOUR
SWING DANCING VALENTINE PALS!!!
DRESS UP IN THE RED AND
WHITE THEME OF THE EVENING...
... AND CELEBRATE TWO BIRTHDAYS!!
7:30-8:00pm Beginner's East Coast Swing
8:00-11:30 Dance! Dance! Dance!
This week at the Rhythm Club, we're making it dressier than usual! We're always looking for an excuse to class the joint up a little, and we think Valentine's Day is a perfect reason. We'll provide the candy hearts and fine music, you provide the wonderful night of dancing with all your friends!!!
Furthermore, we'll be celebrating two birthdays (that we know of so far...), and we know you won't want to miss them: our own "Professor" Robert Vangor, and Gretchen Beck (whose birthday was actually on Monday night); she was lucky enough to get a preliminary Birthday Dance at our Monday night Level 4 class, so she should be nicely warmed up in time for the official dance on Wednesday night!
We also wanted to congratulate the winners of last week's ticket giveaway, Robert "It's My Birthday" Vangor and Julie Bisceglia. They each won a ticket good for admission to Suzy Q's, one of Southern California's best, and hardest swingin' dance venues! We know they will each have a great time there... They were able to answer the question: "What is Duke Ellington's real first name?" "Middle name?" Can you?
(Answer: Edward Kennedy Ellington)
So come down and spend an evening among friends at the Rhythm Club, this Wednesday night. We've got some of the best DJ'ed swing music anywhere and a reputation for being the friendliest club in Southern California! Add a 2,800 square foot dancefloor and some pretty powerful air conditioning, loads of parking and a mere $6 cover charge and you've got yourself a terrific evening. And it's open to ALL AGES!!!

CLASSES ON MONDAY NIGHT,
FEB. 25TH WILL BE AT:
KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS IN PLAYA DEL RAY!!!
(did we mention February 25th is Rusty's birthday?)
We wanted to announce this several weeks in advance to give everyone plenty of time to mark their calendars, or leave themselves little messages, or program their PDAs in an effort to minimize the number of people who will still show up at the desolate and lonely Neptunian Woman's Club when no other swing dancers will be there! For one night only, Monday, February 25th (Rusty's birthday....did we happen to mention that?), classes will move over to the Knights of Columbus hall in Playa Del Ray, only two doors away from the Elks Lodge where we have the Rhythm Club every week -- same parking lot! So please do make whatever notes you need to to remind yourself of this change!!! See you there!
PERFORMANCE CLASS OFF
TO A GREAT START...
AND HERE'S WHERE TO FIND THE SONG, "SWINGIN' ON NOTHIN'"!
We wanted to write a quick note to say how very proud we are of the Performance Class and the terrific job they are doing bringing this new routine to life! It is always a thrill for us to see our ideas and concepts danced with joy and enthusiasm, and by such a talented group of dancers!
For those of you in the Performance Class who are looking for a copy of the song, we have found a place online that carries it! The song, Tommy Dorsey's recording of "Swingin' on Nothin'" is available on the CD "More Fabulous Swing" from CDNOW.com ! This disc really is "fabulous" as the title indicates, also containing such great tunes as : "Bugle Call Rag," "Little Brown Jug," "Otto, Make that Riff Staccatto," and more, by such artists as Benny Goodman, Glenn Miller, and Duke Ellington!!!
You can find the CD by clicking on http://cdnow.com/switch/from=cr-9635397-1/target=buyweb_purchase/itemid=640692 ! Enjoy!!!
JENNI JOHNSON GABELSBERG...RUSTY'S
AND ONE HECK OF A SWING DANCER!!!
For those of you who have been keeping track of Rusty's progress and recovery since her devastating accident a year and a half ago (what are we talking about? click on http://swingshiftontap.com/faqs.htm#23-- for the whole story), we wanted to let you know that she is doing GREAT. A lot of this has to do with the world of physical therapy, which has done wonders in helping Rusty get her movement and feeling back. She wouldn't be doing nearly so well if it weren't for the excellent work of her physical therapist and friend, Jenni Johnson Gabelsberg! Jenni and her husband Jason took classes from us for quite a while, but we haven't seen them as much lately, since they were married several months ago!!! We are so happy for them both, and we hope that when married life settles down a little bit, we'll have the pleasure of dancing with them again, both in classes and at the Rhythm Club. So if you see either of them on a Wednesday night, don't hesitate to ask them for a dance. They're both wonderful dancers and people!

*Wondering what the heck
a "gate" is? This was a phrase popularized by 1940's comedian, Jerry
Colonna, who would holler it out every time he was introduced on the Bob
Hope radio program. It was a friendly salutation to a swing cat (dancer
or swing music enthusiast).
