We understand that there was some sort of professional sporting event last Sunday that may have kept some of our friends and students at home with large amounts of beer and processed food products, but that's OK! You can always join our classes as late as the second week, and we always review like crazy to make sure everyone gets caught up.
So if you were at home for the Super Bowl last Sunday, don't think that you have to wait until March to join our next series of classes -- GET IN ON THIS ONE!!! We had lots of new friends join up last Sunday and Monday, and we'd love to see even MORE of you this coming week, so make your plans to come down and sign up for classes with us at Lindy By The Sea! Make sure to check out our Monday night line-up of classes, too, starting with our Introduction to Shag and Balboa Class from 7pm-8pm! This class is open to absolutely everyone, since it's a beginning level class and covers everything you will need to know to begin dancing these popular, fast paced swing dances. And from 8pm-9pm, we are offering another month of Swing Rueda, with more moves and steps in this extremely popular new dance -- it's like a square dance, but in a ring and with swing music. Lots of great moves and chances to dance with loads of partners! Then from 9pm-10pm, we continue with our Level Four Lindy Hop class, and ongoing class for our more advanced dancers to work on any steps or styling they want! So make plans to sign up for this great new month of classes...you can even pre-register ONLINE simply by clicking http://www.swingshiftontap.com/lbs-preregistration.asp ! L-R Chandler, Rusty, Peter, Tise, Jerry
Over the past several weeks, a small group of swing dance teachers have been getting together every Tuesday afternoon to spend a few hours talking about lindy hop -- dancing, teaching and performing it. Rusty and Peter, Chandler and Lovelynn, Jerry and Tise, and Marcus and Baerble meet up in the San Fernando Valley and have a ball spending time together, sharing experiences and advice about the various aspects of what it's like to teach Lindy Hop in Southern California. These "Teacher's Jams", as they have been named, have become a real highlight in everyone's week! The instructors get to share favorite steps and moves, trade tips on teaching techniques, and generally have a wonderful time of it! Above is a picture of the teachers having some warm and loving banter about a simple move, and below they held still long enough for a portrait.

Many of you gave generously during our fundraiser to help send living Lindy Legend Frankie Manning on his dream trip to Africa. Some time has passed since those fundraisers, and we have recently received an update courtesy of Marcus and Baerble (members of the "Teacher's Jam" -- see above) explaining the state of affairs in this wonderful, global effort to give something back to the man who has brought so much joy and swing into the lives of so many:
Hi, all you swing dancers around the world.
We don't know who inspired you most in your swing dancing, but without Frankie Manning we probably would not do what we love so much today. When we saw the first time Hellzapoppin' we were under Frankie's spell. Meeting him later was a fulfillment of a dream. Frankie inspired and is still inspiring hundreds of people all over the world. If you have been also inspired by Frankie and you want to thank him for the joy he brought in your life you still have a chance. Laurie Ann needs still help for Frankie's vacation. The aim is not hard to reach. But we let Laurie Ann talk now.
Yours Marcus & Bärbl
Here is her email:
I'm sure by now everyone is wondering what ever became of that project to send Frankie to Africa. Needless to say, it took MUCH longer than we had anticipated and so many glitches came up along the way that we were wondering if it would ever happen. Probably the most time consuming aspect was the new information that what Frankie really wanted was not a vacation but to go as a sort of cultural emissary, to teach, and be welcomed by people who knew who he was. Thanks to Mickey DavidsonÕs research and connections, we were able to find people in Zimbabwe who were connected to the arts and more than delighted to host him. He'll be on a one week teaching tour followed by a week of vacation, all arranged by his African hosts . We were not able to send him first class, as had been our original intention, but we did manage to raise enough to send him, along with his son Chazz Young, business class, and we were also able to send Mickey along on another airline in coach to meet up with them in Africa to help Frankie teach, and he will earn mileage for the trip as an added bonus. A few loose ends are still being tied up: a place for Frankie and Chazz to stay during an overnight stopover in London and hopes that enough people who may have meant to donate but forgot will fatten the pot at the last minute. We're about $2,000 short for the budget sent us for expenses by the people in Africa. Frankie will be here in San Francisco this weekend and we'll be making a formal presentation at that time, but since we'll be sending the money to Africa so that all expenses will be taken care of, and paying for everything along the way in advance, we'll be presenting him only with the tickets and a letter listing everyone who contributed so we can continue to collect the last $2000 after the presentation. I'll send him a second letter later with the names of everyone who contributed after the presentation. The PO Box is no longer in service, but if anyone wants to donate you can still do so through me. He won't be going until May, so we've decided to keep the account open for another month because I know a lot of you didn't contribute because you just weren't sure it was going to happen or you thought our $30,000 goal was absurd, we really need your contributions now. I would like to apologize to everyone for my lack of fundraising skills. This was a first for me and I made a lot of mistakes, not the least of which was not to keep everyone informed of what was going on along the way. However, if you are one of those people who would still like to contribute and think it makes more sense now, please do so. Send the last minute checks to Laurie Ann Lepoff, 714 Prospect Ave, Oakland, CA, 94610, made out to FrankieÕs Excellent Vacation Club. Or for credit cards use paypal: just log on to www.paypal.com , follow the directions to FrankieÕs ÒExcellent Vacation ClubÓ. Email address is email@example.com. Everything we raise, after paying for the visas and overnight stopovers, will be sent to the hosts and whatever doesn't get spent will be given to Frankie at the end. If you are planning to contribute, please don't delay. Our African hosts need to make advance reservations and can't do so until we send them the funds. Feel free to ask me questions if you have any concerns. Email me at firstname.lastname@example.org, or if your missive or mine gets lost, call me at (510) 444-4621. Thank you all for your patience, understanding, and generosity.
Laurie Ann Lepoff, with Sylvia Sykes
For those of you who are not yet familiar with the amazing work of Margie Dowens (nee Cormier), here's your chance! Margie is one of Southern California's most beloved dancers and internet saints, hosting and continually updating one of the most thorough websites for information about lindy hop in the world. Her website is chock full of great stuff: a weekly listing of dance events and venues, scores of teachers and classes to check out, some INCREDIBLE notes on following and leading (we can't recommend these things enough, actually...) and even listings of websites for swing dancing outside of Southern California. If you are planning to travel anywhere in the future, just check out the link to the lindy hop website in the area you're heading to...anywhere from San Diego to Toronto to Stockholm to SINGAPORE...Margie's got you covered. Take a few minutes (ha ha...you'll take MUCH longer, and love every minute of it, we're sure...) to browse around this beautiful and comprehensive site. You'll be glad you did. It's at http://www.lindyhopping.com !

*Wondering what the heck
a "gate" is? This was a phrase popularized by 1940's comedian, Jerry
Colonna, who would holler it out every time he was introduced on the Bob
Hope radio program. It was a friendly salutation to a swing cat (dancer
or swing music enthusiast).
