QUOTE OF THE WEEK

"And those dancers were right there waiting for whatever you wanted to play.
At first they were standing around out there, just listening and waiting to
find out where you were, and then they got on it..."

--Count Basie
reminiscing about playing at the Savoy Ballroom
in Good Morning Blues: The Autobiography of Count Basie

FEATURED CLASS:  SWING RUEDA (AKA "UNSQUARE DANCE")!!!
AND
NEW BALBOA/SHAG BASICS MONDAY NIGHT CLASS!!!

Our latest series of classes has gotten off to a terrific start and we are so thrilled to have so many new friends joining us this year!  Sunday's Lindy Hop classes were full of eager and enthusiastic new dancers and we can't wait to get to know them all better in the months to come!  TONIGHT, our first class of the evening will be Shag and Balboa Basics, a beginner level class in these two extremely popular dances (this class is open to dancers of all levels, from beginners to advanced)!!!  And our Featured Class for the month of January will be the Swing Rueda, an exciting new dance made up of swing moves we all know, with lots of partner changing (think of a square dance...but in a circle...to swing music...and kinda cooler... hep'er!)!  This dance is springing up all over the world, and we are excited to be offering a class in it so we can all participate in ruedas wherever they may happen!!!  So make sure to plan to join us for these great new classes coming up in January!  For more details, click on http://swingshiftontap.com/lbs-classes.asp

MAKE YOUR PLANS NOW TO ATTEND THE
2002 LINDY CRUISE TO MEXICO!!!
APRIL 19-22, 2002

PRE-REGISTRATION DEADLINE JANUARY 15TH

We are thrilled to tell you all that we will again be a part of the 2002 Lindy Cruise to Mexico, brought to you by DanceFun!!!  We were involved in last year's cruise and we can honestly say that it was one of the most enjoyable events we have ever done!  The line-up of teachers is fantastic, including ourselves, Erik and Sylvia, Shesha and Terra, Steve Conrad, Melinda Comeau, and Sylvia Sykes!!!  And the live music for the nightly dances will be handled by none other than the SWING SESSION!  This is a cruise of course, so the dance classes are kept to a manageable amount per day (read "two one-hour classes") to allow for plenty of time to relax, lounge around or whatever.  The cost for this outstanding weekend cruise to Ensenada is only $399 per person (plus port and departure taxes) until January 12th.  After that the cost increases, so make sure to get your registration filled out NOW...we have loads of registration forms at our classes and events, so just ask for one!!!  For more information on this incredible event, click http://dancefun.com/lindy/020419swing&lindycruise/lindycruise_pg1.htm !  Hope to see you onboard!!!

NEW LINDY BY THE SEA MERCHANDISE!!!

We'll have them at the Rhythm Club, and at our classes in Manhattan Beach on Sunday and Monday.  Towels - $10.00, Shirts - $20.00

LINK OF THE WEEK

This week's link is one we should all be familiar with: Southern California's own 24 hour, commercial free jazz radio station, KLON!  This station broadcasts from the campus of Cal State Long Beach and is a non-profit organization which brings us all the best in jazz music!  The DJs are top-notch, and the music can't be beat (of course!)  Since KLON doesn't do commercials, though, they need member support, just like public television, so if you enjoy what you see on the website, and even more to the point, what you hear on the radio, don't hesitate to donate a bit.  Remember, this is the music that we all love to dance to!  And don't forget to tune in to The Swingin' Years with Chuck Cecil every Sunday morning from 6am until 10am!!!  Check out the website now at http://www.klon.org !

See you soon!

Swingcerely,
Rusty and Peter

*Wondering what the heck a "gate" is?  This was a phrase popularized by 1940's comedian, Jerry Colona, who would holler it out every time he was introduced on the Bob Hope radio program.  It was a friendly salutation to a swing cat (dancer or swing music enthusiast).
