QUOTE OF THE WEEK

"When he's just standing still, Frankie is swinging.
He doesn't have to do one thing with his muscles and
you know he's feeling it."

SATURDAY, DECEMBER 1ST
A SWINGIN' SYMPOSIUM!

By popular demand, we are offering our Swingin' Symposium!  This workshop is one of our most popular, and we have brought it across the country and around the world.  It's a fantastic two-part package:  the first half of the workshop is devoted to showing you fantastic film clips of swing music and dancers from 1928 up to the present.  The second half is an amazing, hands-on class in understanding the structure of swing music and how to use that knowledge to help you dance more musically and "hit the breaks" in the music.  All in all, a great workshop for ALL dancers of ALL levels.  If you only plan to get to one workshop from us, make it this one!  For more details on this workshop, check out http://swingshiftontap.com/symposium.htm

A TERRIFIC PERFORMANCE OF THE BIG APPLE AT
THE SATIN BALLROOM LAST WEEKEND!!!

Marcus, Peter, & Rusty

Last Saturday night was another great Satin Ballroom dance in Culver City, again attracting hundreds and hundreds of swing dancers from all over to dance the night away to the swinging sounds of the Mike Henebry Orchestra, featuring the vocals of none other than Cassie Miller!  Those who attended were also treated to a special performance of the Big Apple!  This routine is based on the Big Apple which was choreographed by Frankie Manning in the late 1930's and performed by Whitey's Lindy Hoppers.  Last Saturday night, the routine was performed by Rusty and Peter, Marcus and Baerble, Jerry and Tise, and Chandler and Lovelynn!  It was a fantastic time, and the crowd LOVED it!  Keep your eyes peeled for announcements about the next time any of these terrific dancers perform...they're worth watching!!!

A LETTER FROM OUR DISTANT SWEDISH PAL, GUNILLA!!!

Many of you will remember a swing dancer who joined our dance family for several months, Gunilla.  She was in the United States studying Geology at USC, but recently returned to her home in Sweden.  She recently sent this e-mail which she asked to have passed on to everyone!  (We're sure she'd love to hear from you:  gunilla_a@hotmail.com)

Hejsan Rusty, Peter and all swingfreaks.

I am now near a little town called Lidköping in the south-middle part of Sweden. My family lives here on a farm and I am now enjoying the beautiful and warm fall. Since I came home I have been traveling within Sweden to visit friends and now I will travel even more. On Friday I leave for Germany, Switzerland, Austria and France with my interrail card to check out the swing dancing in Europe for a month. I hope you all are doing fine and dancing like crazy. I very much miss the dancing in LA, since I only had two opportunities to swing dance in Sweden. Take care of yourselves and keep swinging.

RUSTY AND PETER NEARING THE END OF ANOTHER GREAT
SEMESTER AT USC!!!

You may not all be aware of this, but we have been teaching wildly successful swing dancing classes at USC for two and a half years now!  This is one of our absolute favorite teaching engagements, and we are always thrilled to be asked back.  This semester has been no exception, with loads of enthusiastic students getting bitten hard by the swing bug!  Sadly, this semester is about to wind up, but we got them together for a fun group picture to share with you all, so here they are, the Level One Swing Dance class at USC, with Rusty and Peter!

LUNCH WITH A LEGEND:
RUSTY AND PETER CELEBRATE WITH FAYARD NICHOLAS
AND BANU GIBSON!!!

Last Tuesday afternoon, we were thrilled to celebrate the 87th birthday of dance legend Fayard Nicholas!  Fayard and his late brother Harold made up the incredible tap dance team of the Nicholas Brothers, who began performing as children at the Cotton Club and went on to become two of the best tappers ever.  Fayard turned 87 recently and we weren't able to make his official party (due to a previous engagement).  So we took advantage of the chance to take him to lunch instead, and we brought along our friends, Banu Gibson and her pianist from the New Orleans Hot Jazz band, David!   We all had a terrific lunch (if you're ever in the San Fernando Valley, definitely go to "Mo's" on Riverside Drive in Burbank...) and heard loads of great stories from Fayard!  Afterwards, we all took some great pictures outside, including one of all our shoes!  What a ball!!!  (If you want to learn about the Nicholas Brothers, check out this site: http://www.nicholasbrothers.com/indexm.htm OR read about them in Rusty Frank's book "TAP! The Greatest Tap Dance Stars and Their Stories 1900-1955, available at Amazon.com or right here at home on our site: http://swingshiftontap.com/ontap.asp#tap )
