Dear Friends,
Whenever disaster strikes, swing dancers come together to help. It's something about their big hearts, and it touches me deeply.
Since I announced the "Hop for Haiti" fundraiser on January 14th, the response has been terrific. Not only did we have an amazing event at our club, the "Hop for Haiti" has now gone international!
As far as I know, this is the first time Lindy Hoppers have worked internationally to help a crisis. I hope it sets the stage to be able to mobilize quickly in future when need calls.
Let's give a great showing from our swing community to help the people in Haiti!

I chose Doctors Without Borders for many reasons. One, they were already there in Haiti! Two, they know how to operate quickly in disasters. Three, we all trust them.

We did it! And we had an amazing time! Yes, you read right above, we raised $5,713.74 through our Hop for Haiti last night at Rusty's Rhythm Club.
We had 140 dancers, Lil' Mo & The Dynaflos playing up a storm for us, and just about the best feeling you could ever find! Everyone was so ecstatic about doing what they love - together as a community - and helping a desperate cause through a great organization (Doctors Without Borders).
We had an amazing list of Silent Auction and Raffle items. They take their own web page. So:

"Hop for Haiti" will be held at Rusty's Rhythm Club on Wednesday, January 27th 2010, from 8:00-11:30pm. All proceeds will benefit Doctors Without Borders. Come along and do what you love, DANCING!, and do a good deed in the meantime.

Rusty. Thank-you for all of your organizational skills. I shared this info with my father, who is most happy = I explained how friends in my dance community are rallying together to donate $$ and support fellow Haitians. He also shared the info with my aunt, cousins and their children currently in Petionville (they ha...ve an aquafer filled with water that should last for a few more days, so miraculously they are all safe and secure in the home). I am most happy to know that much of the pent-up energy to do something after the disastrous earthquake is being channeled into these great events. Thank- you from my heart.... as a lindyhopper, as a fellow dance organizer, as a biracial woman whose father is from Haiti ... and most importantly a person who is warmed by the thought of humanity helping others... Thanks again :0)
